Trump Slams Nobel Peace Prize Decision After Navi Pillay Wins 2026 Honour

Syracuse, New York, October 10, 2026: US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised the decision to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navi Pillay, calling the outcome “disgraceful” and claiming it has left an “indelible stain” on Norway. Trump has repeatedly argued that his diplomatic efforts in international conflicts deserved Nobel recognition.

Trump Calls Nobel Decision ‘Disgraceful’

Speaking at a rally in Syracuse, Trump criticised the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision and questioned Pillay’s selection. He said he had never heard of her and accused the committee of being influenced by ideological considerations.

Trump Reiterates Claim That He Deserved the Prize

Trump highlighted his claimed role in preventing or reducing tensions in several international disputes. He referred to issues involving North Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan while arguing that his diplomatic efforts merited recognition.

However, according to Reuters, he did not provide evidence for some of the claims made during his speech.

Navi Pillay Honoured for Work in International Law

The 85-year-old Navi Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her longstanding work promoting peace, human rights and international law.

Her career includes serving as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Nobel Committee Emphasises the Rule of Law

The Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted the importance of maintaining an international system based on law at a time when global judicial institutions face increasing political pressure.

The committee did not mention Trump or Israel in its official award citation.

Pillay’s Gaza Inquiry Remains Controversial

Pillay previously chaired a United Nations Commission of Inquiry examining the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, an allegation that Israel has strongly rejected. The inquiry has made Pillay a prominent figure in international legal debates surrounding the conflict.

Trump Calls Pillay a ‘Mystery Person’

During his remarks, Trump referred to Pillay as a “mystery person” and accused the Nobel Committee of damaging the award’s reputation.

He warned that the decision would not be forgotten and directed much of his criticism towards Norway, where the Nobel Peace Prize selection process is administered by an independent committee.

Norway’s Government Does Not Directly Select the Winner

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for choosing the Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Although its members are appointed by Norway’s parliament, the committee makes its selection independently. The Norwegian government does not directly choose the winner.

US Imposes Sanctions on ICC After Nobel Announcement

The dispute comes amid broader tensions between Washington and international judicial institutions.

According to Reuters, the Trump administration imposed sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court hours after the Nobel announcement. Pillay previously served as a judge at the ICC, which said the US action challenged the rule of law.

UN Human Rights Chief Welcomes Pillay’s Recognition

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk welcomed Pillay’s Nobel recognition, describing it as a collective victory for people working to advance human rights, justice and accountability.

He highlighted the continuing importance of international criminal-justice institutions in addressing serious crimes.

Nobel Decision Fuels Wider Political Debate

Trump’s reaction has added to the broader debate over international courts, human-rights institutions and the role of global legal frameworks.

With Washington also increasing pressure on the ICC, Pillay’s award has drawn attention to wider questions surrounding international justice, accountability and the rule of law.
