NEW DELHI, September 30: Leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc met in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, concerns raised by opposition parties about the Election Commission of India and a coordinated strategy for future protests. The meeting resulted in plans for nationwide demonstrations and further political action over electoral issues.
INDIA Bloc Holds Key Meeting in Delhi
Senior leaders from several opposition parties participated in the meeting to develop a common position on electoral-roll revision and the functioning of the Election Commission.
The discussions focused on the SIR process, voter-list changes and demands raised by opposition parties for greater transparency in election administration.
SIR Remains Central Issue
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls was one of the main subjects discussed.
Opposition parties have argued that the revision process requires stronger safeguards to ensure eligible voters are not excluded.
The Election Commission has maintained that the SIR is intended to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls and has said its final decisions on the exercise were taken unanimously by the full Commission.
Opposition Announces Protest Programme
Following the meeting, INDIA bloc parties announced plans for coordinated demonstrations.
District-level “Save Democracy” programmes are planned from October 2 to October 8, while opposition MPs are expected to march towards the Election Commission office on October 6.

Opposition leaders also announced plans for a larger mobilisation over electoral issues.
A major “Save Democracy” rally is planned for November 1, with leaders from multiple opposition parties expected to participate.
The campaign is intended to highlight the alliance’s concerns regarding voter lists and the independence and transparency of election administration.
Kharge Raises Electoral Reform Demands
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge raised several demands during the discussions.
These included using electoral rolls prepared before the latest SIR process for future elections and reconsidering the use of electronic voting machines.
These are opposition proposals and have not been adopted by the Election Commission.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar Also Discussed
The role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was another major issue at the meeting.
Several opposition parties have called for his resignation or removal, alleging that the Election Commission has not acted impartially.

Opposition parties have also discussed possible parliamentary action relating to the Chief Election Commissioner.

Election Commission Defends Its Decisions
The Election Commission has rejected suggestions that its major SIR decisions reflected an institutional split.
It has stated that final decisions relating to the revision exercise were unanimously approved by all three members of the Commission.
The poll body has also introduced procedural changes intended to make voter verification easier.
Review of Digital Systems Underway
The Election Commission has separately ordered a review of its digital systems used for electoral-roll management.
The review follows scrutiny over voter-list software and procedures used during the SIR process.

The BJP has rejected the opposition’s allegations against the Election Commission.
Party leaders have argued that revision of electoral rolls is necessary to identify entries involving deceased, duplicate or otherwise ineligible voters.
