New Delhi, June 29: The Delhi Government has decided to drop its proposal to extend incentives under the upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 to strong hybrid vehicles, choosing instead to continue prioritising fully electric vehicles (EVs) in its clean mobility strategy.
The decision follows discussions with stakeholders and policy experts, who argued that government incentives should remain focused on accelerating the adoption of zero-emission vehicles rather than hybrid technologies.
Focus Remains on Pure Electric Vehicles
Officials said the revised EV policy will continue to promote battery-powered electric vehicles through purchase incentives, charging infrastructure expansion, and measures aimed at increasing EV adoption across the National Capital.
The government believes that prioritising pure EVs will contribute more effectively to reducing air pollution and lowering carbon emissions in Delhi.
Proposal on Hybrid Vehicles Dropped
An earlier draft of the policy had proposed extending certain benefits to strong hybrid vehicles, which combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor.
However, after reviewing feedback from industry stakeholders and environmental experts, the government decided not to include hybrids in the incentive framework.
Officials maintained that while hybrid technology offers improved fuel efficiency, fully electric vehicles remain the preferred long-term solution for sustainable urban transport.
Charging Infrastructure to Expand
The updated EV policy is expected to place greater emphasis on expanding Delhi’s public charging network, supporting battery-swapping facilities, and encouraging private investment in EV infrastructure.
Authorities also plan to strengthen charging facilities in residential colonies, commercial complexes, and public parking areas to make EV ownership more convenient.
Push for Cleaner Urban Mobility
The Delhi Government has set ambitious targets to increase the share of electric vehicles in new registrations over the coming years.
Officials said continued policy support will help reduce vehicular emissions, improve air quality, and support India’s broader transition towards sustainable transportation.
Industry Awaits Final Policy Notification
Automobile manufacturers and industry bodies are closely watching the final version of the EV Policy 2.0, which is expected to provide greater clarity on incentives, infrastructure development, and future investment opportunities in the electric mobility sector.
Experts believe the policy will play a key role in shaping Delhi’s transition towards cleaner and greener transportation.
