NEW DELHI, September 27: World Tourism Day 2026 is being celebrated across the globe today, with this year’s theme focusing on how artificial intelligence, digital technology and data can reshape the future of travel and tourism.
The official theme for 2026 is “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”, highlighting the growing role of technology in making travel more personalised, accessible, efficient and sustainable. El Salvador is hosting the official global celebrations this year.
World Tourism Day Celebrated Every Year on September 27
World Tourism Day is observed annually on September 27 to highlight tourism’s social, cultural and economic importance.
The observance also draws attention to tourism’s role in connecting communities, creating employment, supporting local economies and encouraging cultural exchange.
The United Nations officially lists September 27 as World Tourism Day.
AI and Digital Transformation Take Centre Stage in 2026
This year’s celebrations focus heavily on the rapidly expanding role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in tourism.
AI is increasingly being used across the travel industry for personalised recommendations, itinerary planning, customer support, demand forecasting, translation and destination management.
The 2026 theme encourages governments, tourism businesses and destinations to examine how technology can be used to make travel experiences more seamless while also supporting sustainable and inclusive development.
El Salvador Hosts Official Global Celebrations
UN Tourism selected El Salvador as the host country for the official World Tourism Day 2026 celebrations.
The decision was linked with the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” putting technology-driven changes in the tourism sector at the centre of this year’s discussions.
The global event is expected to bring together tourism policymakers, industry representatives and other stakeholders to discuss how AI and digital infrastructure could transform destinations and traveller experiences.
India Highlights Tourism’s Growing Economic Role
India is also marking World Tourism Day with programmes highlighting the country’s tourism growth, cultural diversity and expanding digital ecosystem.
According to government data, tourism contributed around 5.22% to India’s GDP in 2023-24 and supported approximately 8.46 crore jobs.
Domestic tourist visits reached around 428.55 crore in 2025, while foreign tourist visits increased to approximately 2.53 crore.
Tourism Secretary Highlights India’s Diversity
Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar said tourism is an important contributor to the economy and employment generation.
Highlighting India’s “Unity in Diversity,” he pointed to the country’s wide variety of destinations, ranging from the Himalayas and the Northeast to coastal regions, wildlife destinations, heritage sites and culturally significant locations.
India Strengthening Digital Tourism Ecosystem
India has increasingly adopted digital services to make travel easier for domestic and international visitors.
Government initiatives include the e-Visa system, Incredible India Digital Platform and NIDHI+, while AI-enabled services are being explored to deliver more personalised travel experiences.
India’s e-Visa facility is now available to nationals of 172 countries, according to Akashvani News.
Digital platforms can help tourists discover destinations, access information, make bookings and plan journeys more efficiently.
National Digital Tourism Stack to Be Unveiled
As part of India’s central World Tourism Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is expected to unveil several new initiatives.
One of the major initiatives is the National Digital Tourism Stack, designed as open digital public infrastructure that aims to make tourism offerings more discoverable, accessible and trustworthy.
The initiative forms part of the government’s wider push to integrate digital technology with India’s growing tourism ecosystem.
Dekho Apna Desh 2.0 to Promote Lesser-Known Destinations
The government is also set to introduce Dekho Apna Desh 2.0.
The initiative will focus on promoting lesser-known destinations that are ready to receive tourists and could help distribute visitors beyond already crowded tourism centres.
The objective is to expand tourism opportunities while creating economic benefits for communities in emerging destinations.
Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD Continue Tourism Expansion
Several existing schemes are also contributing to the development of India’s tourism infrastructure.
These include Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, cruise tourism programmes and tourism skill-development initiatives.
The programmes aim to improve tourist destinations, enhance visitor experiences and generate livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Tourism Minister Calls Sector a Major Employment Driver
Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a message marking World Tourism Day, said tourism is increasingly becoming an important foundation for employment, local economic activity and development.
He also highlighted India’s heritage, culture and natural diversity as potential sources of new economic opportunities, particularly for young people.
AI Could Change How People Plan and Experience Travel
Artificial intelligence is already beginning to change several stages of the travel experience.
AI-powered platforms can analyse traveller preferences, recommend destinations, build customised itineraries and assist visitors in real time.
For tourism authorities and businesses, technology can also help analyse visitor flows, manage destinations and improve decision-making.
However, the broader focus of World Tourism Day 2026 is not simply adopting more technology, but using it in ways that make tourism inclusive, sustainable and people-centred.
World Tourism Day Highlights Future of Travel
World Tourism Day 2026 comes at a time when the global travel industry is undergoing major technological change.
AI, digital platforms and data-driven services are becoming increasingly important across airlines, hotels, travel companies and tourism destinations.
This year’s theme reflects the growing expectation that technology will play a major role in determining how travellers discover destinations and how governments and businesses manage tourism in the years ahead.
