NEW DELHI, September 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after she became the longest continuously serving prime minister in Italy’s postwar history, marking a rare milestone of political stability in the country.
Modi Congratulates Meloni on Historic Milestone
In his message, Modi said the milestone reflected the trust and confidence of the Italian people in Meloni’s leadership.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the close personal and diplomatic relationship between the two leaders and said Meloni’s friendship has played an important role in strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership.
He expressed hope that India and Italy would continue their close cooperation to build greater prosperity for the people of both countries.
Meloni Breaks Postwar Longevity Record
Meloni took office as Italy’s prime minister in October 2022.
Her government has now surpassed the longevity record held by Silvio Berlusconi’s second administration, which remained in office for 1,412 days.
The achievement is particularly notable in Italy, which has experienced frequent changes of government since becoming a republic after World War II.
Rare Political Stability in Italy
Italy has had dozens of governments during the postwar period, with administrations historically lasting considerably less than a full five-year parliamentary term.
Meloni’s coalition has remained in power despite economic challenges, political disputes and changes in the wider European geopolitical landscape.
Her Brothers of Italy-led coalition came to power following the 2022 general election.
India-Italy Partnership Has Strengthened
Relations between India and Italy have expanded significantly in recent years, particularly after the bilateral relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2023 and subsequently developed into a Special Strategic Partnership.
The two countries cooperate in areas including trade, investment, defence, technology, clean energy, connectivity and people-to-people ties.
Modi and Meloni have also interacted frequently at major international forums, strengthening high-level political engagement between New Delhi and Rome.
Modi Looks Forward to Continued Cooperation
In his congratulatory message, Modi said he looks forward to continuing close cooperation with Meloni and wished her success in the years ahead.
The milestone places Meloni at the centre of a period of unusual government continuity in modern Italian politics as the country moves toward its next parliamentary election, currently due in 2027.
