NEW DELHI: India has strongly condemned the reported destruction of a century-old Hindu temple in Pakistan’s Punjab province and called on Islamabad to conduct a prompt investigation, hold those responsible accountable and restore the religious site.
The Ministry of External Affairs raised concerns over reports involving the historic temple located in Siraj village of Narowal district, describing the incident as a serious attack on a minority place of worship.
India Demands Prompt Investigation
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had noted the reports with deep concern and condemned what New Delhi described as a reprehensible act of vandalism.
India called upon the Pakistan government to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation and ensure accountability for those responsible.
Restoration of Temple Sought
New Delhi also urged Pakistan to take immediate remedial measures to restore the damaged temple.
The MEA said Pakistan has an obligation to ensure the safety, security and well-being of its minority communities as well as protect their religious and cultural heritage.
Temple Was Reportedly Damaged on August 21
The temple, believed to be more than 100 years old, was reportedly destroyed on August 21 in Siraj village, around 130 kilometres from Lahore.
Minority representatives and some local residents have alleged that the structure was deliberately brought down in connection with plans involving a nearby madrassa.
Conflicting Claims Over Cause
The circumstances surrounding the destruction remain disputed.
Minority groups have alleged deliberate demolition, while Pakistani authorities have maintained that the structure collapsed following torrential rainfall. The competing accounts have not been independently resolved.
Minority Groups Seek Accountability
The incident has triggered protests and demands from minority representatives in Pakistan for an investigation and reconstruction of the temple.
India said the episode highlighted continuing concerns regarding the protection of religious minorities and their places of worship in Pakistan.
Further clarity is expected if Pakistani authorities conduct a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the temple’s destruction.
