Tim Cook is serving his final scheduled day as Apple’s Chief Executive Officer on Monday, August 31, bringing his nearly 15-year tenure at the helm of the technology giant to a close.
Apple has confirmed that John Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will become the company’s next CEO effective September 1, 2026. The leadership transition was unanimously approved by Apple’s Board of Directors as part of a long-term succession plan.
Cook, however, is not leaving Apple. Starting September 1, he will become Executive Chairman of Apple’s Board of Directors and will continue supporting the company in selected areas, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
Cook became Apple CEO in August 2011, succeeding co-founder Steve Jobs. During his tenure, Apple dramatically expanded its global operations, services business and product ecosystem while becoming one of the world’s most valuable companies.
Reuters reported that Apple’s market value increased by around $3.6 trillion during Cook’s leadership, underscoring the scale of the company’s growth over his years as CEO.
Incoming CEO John Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has spent more than two decades with the company. As head of Hardware Engineering, he has overseen engineering teams responsible for major products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro.
Ternus has also played a significant role in Apple’s work on product durability, materials, hardware design and environmental improvements.
His first major public event as Apple CEO is expected to come quickly. Apple has scheduled a major product launch for September 9, where the company is expected to introduce its next-generation iPhone lineup.
As part of the board transition, longtime non-executive chairman Arthur Levinson will become Apple’s lead independent director on September 1, while Ternus will also join Apple’s board.
Cook’s transition therefore marks the end of one chapter rather than his departure from the company, with Apple entering a new leadership era under a CEO whose background is deeply rooted in hardware engineering and product development.
