Iran’s military said it launched a drone attack targeting US forces stationed at Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates early Monday, August 31, marking a fresh escalation in regional tensions.
According to Iran’s army, dozens of explosive drones were sent toward locations housing American military personnel and helicopters at Al Minhad Air Base. Tehran said the operation was carried out in retaliation for a US strike on Iran’s Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz a day earlier.
Iranian authorities said the earlier US operation on Larak Island killed and wounded Iranian military personnel and civilians. US forces had targeted two Iranian launchers that officials said were linked to threats against maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the United Arab Emirates disputed Iran’s account of the Al Minhad incident.
The UAE Ministry of Defence said reports that Al Minhad Air Base had been successfully targeted were false, adding that the country remained on high alert and fully prepared to respond to security threats.
UAE authorities separately confirmed that their Air Force responded to an Iranian drone approaching over UAE territorial waters and intercepted the aircraft. No casualties or significant damage were immediately reported.
The incident came amid a broader exchange of fire between Iran and US forces in the region.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also said they launched ballistic missiles at US-linked military bases in Jordan after the strike on Larak Island. Jordanian authorities said incoming missiles were intercepted and no major damage was reported.
Al Minhad Air Base, located near Dubai, has historically been used as an important logistics and military hub by foreign forces operating in the Gulf region.
The latest confrontation has increased concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy-shipping routes. Any prolonged military escalation in the region could have significant implications for global crude-oil supplies and prices.
With Iran claiming a direct attack on a military facility in the UAE and Abu Dhabi denying that the base was hit, the exact impact of Monday’s incident remains contested.
Regional governments remain on heightened alert as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to intensify.
