6 Killed, Several Injured as Private Bus Rams Container Truck in Telangana’s Suryapet

Suryapet: At least six people, including five women, were killed and several others injured after a private passenger bus crashed into a container truck on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway (NH-65) in Telangana’s Suryapet district early Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The accident occurred in the Kodad area near Dwarakunta at around 4:30 AM, according to police information cited by PTI. The bus was travelling from Hyderabad towards Vijayawada and Eluru in Andhra Pradesh when it struck the container truck from behind.

Six Passengers Die in Early-Morning Crash

Police said six passengers died following the collision, with five of the victims reported to be women.

The impact severely damaged the front portion of the private bus, leaving passengers trapped inside the vehicle.

Emergency teams, police and local authorities rushed to the accident site and began rescue operations before shifting injured passengers to nearby hospitals.

Early media reports differ slightly on the total number of injured passengers. PTI-based reports said at least 12 people were hospitalised, while other local reports put the number of injured at around 20.

Three Injured Reportedly in Critical Condition

According to the latest PTI-based report, three of the injured passengers were in critical condition and were shifted to Vijayawada for advanced medical treatment.

Other injured passengers were taken to hospitals in and around Kodad for treatment.

Authorities are continuing to monitor their condition, and the casualty figures could be updated as more information becomes available.

Around 42 Passengers Were on the Bus

Preliminary police information indicated that approximately 42 passengers were travelling aboard the bus when the crash occurred.

The bus had departed Hyderabad and was travelling towards Eluru via Vijayawada.

The force of the collision caused extensive damage to the front section of the vehicle, highlighting the severity of the impact.

Some reports placed the passenger count at 43, reflecting minor differences in early information released immediately after the accident.

What Caused the Accident?

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Police said preliminary information suggested that the container truck may have first hit a road divider before the bus crashed into it from behind.

Local reporting has also raised other possible factors, including an overtaking attempt or driver fatigue, but these possibilities have not yet been officially established.

Investigators are expected to examine the vehicles, road conditions, driver accounts and other available evidence before determining responsibility for the collision.

Telangana Chief Minister Expresses Condolences

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the deaths and conveyed condolences to the families of the victims.

The Chief Minister directed Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and other officials to ensure that those injured in the accident receive the best possible medical treatment.

Officials were also asked to take all necessary measures to support the injured passengers and their families.

Police Launch Investigation

Police have registered a case and started investigating the circumstances that led to the collision.

Authorities will seek to determine factors including the speed of the bus, the position of the container truck at the time of impact and whether any traffic or safety violations contributed to the crash.

The Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway is one of the region’s major inter-state road corridors and carries significant overnight passenger and commercial traffic.

Rescue and Medical Treatment Remain Priority

The immediate focus remains on treating the injured passengers and completing formal procedures relating to those who died.

The bodies of the victims have been shifted for post-mortem examination, while seriously injured passengers continue to receive treatment.

As of Wednesday morning, the confirmed death toll stood at six, while authorities continued to verify the exact number and condition of the injured.
