India Open World Cup Campaign With Convincing Win
India began their 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup campaign with a strong 3–1 victory over Wales in their opening Pool D match at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led the charge with two goals from penalty corners, while Sanjay opened the scoring for India. Wales pulled one goal back late in the match through Sam Welsh, but India held their composure to secure all three points.
Sanjay and Harmanpreet Put India Ahead
India made an aggressive start and quickly established control of possession and territory.
Sanjay scored in the eighth minute, giving India an early 1–0 advantage. Just three minutes later, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to double India’s lead.
India continued to create opportunities while keeping Wales under pressure. The Indian defence also remained organised whenever Wales attempted to counterattack.
Harmanpreet Adds Second Goal
India continued to dominate after halftime and eventually extended their advantage in the third quarter.
In the 43rd minute, India earned another penalty corner and Harmanpreet once again delivered with a powerful grounded flick. His second goal of the match put India 3–0 ahead and strengthened their grip on the contest.
All three of India’s goals came from penalty-corner situations, highlighting the team’s effectiveness from set pieces.
Wales Score Late Consolation Goal
Wales continued to fight until the final quarter and eventually found a breakthrough in the 56th minute.
Sam Welsh was credited with the goal after a video review examined the circumstances surrounding the ball crossing the goal-line. The review confirmed the goal, reducing India’s advantage to 3–1.
India remained composed during the closing stages and prevented Wales from mounting a comeback.
Harmanpreet Named Player of the Match
Harmanpreet’s two-goal performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Following the victory, the Indian captain said the team had started well but acknowledged that there were areas to improve. He also stressed the importance of creating more opportunities from open play in the upcoming matches.
The win gives India three points in Pool D and provides an encouraging start to their World Cup campaign.

India’s next Pool D match will be against England on August 17 at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen.
