Melbourne/New Delhi, July 10: India and Australia have announced a comprehensive package of bilateral initiatives aimed at significantly expanding cooperation in energy security, defence, critical minerals, strategic trade and advanced technologies, marking one of the most important developments in relations between the two Indo-Pacific partners in recent years.
The announcements came during high-level meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to elevating the India–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Officials described the agreements as a major step towards strengthening regional security, resilient supply chains and long-term economic cooperation.
Uranium Cooperation Becomes Operational
A key outcome of the summit was the operationalisation of arrangements for Australian uranium exports for India’s civilian nuclear energy programme.
The agreement will support India’s long-term clean energy strategy by ensuring reliable uranium supplies for peaceful nuclear power generation under international safeguards.
Leaders from both countries said the development would contribute to:
- Long-term energy security
- Expansion of clean energy
- Lower carbon emissions
- Stable civilian nuclear fuel supplies
The move also ends years of procedural delays following the original civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

- Maritime domain awareness
- Defence technology collaboration
- Information sharing
- Logistics coordination
Officials noted that growing strategic cooperation reflects the shared objective of maintaining peace, stability and freedom of navigation across the Indo-Pacific.

Recognising the increasing global demand for critical minerals required for batteries, semiconductors and clean energy technologies, India and Australia agreed to deepen cooperation in mineral exploration, processing and supply chain resilience.
The partnership will focus on:
- Lithium
- Rare earth elements
- Cobalt
- Nickel
- Advanced battery materials
Industry experts believe collaboration in this sector will help reduce dependence on concentrated global supply chains while supporting manufacturing growth in both countries.
Trade and Investment Receive Fresh Push
The two leaders also emphasised accelerating negotiations on broader economic cooperation and encouraging greater two-way investment.
Priority sectors include:
- Renewable energy
- Digital technology
- Infrastructure
- Manufacturing
- Education
- Artificial intelligence
- Clean hydrogen
Business delegations from both countries participated in discussions aimed at identifying new investment opportunities and promoting long-term commercial partnerships.
Shared Indo-Pacific Vision
India and Australia reiterated their support for a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific, while reaffirming their commitment to international law and regional stability.
Both nations highlighted the importance of cooperation through platforms such as the Quad, while strengthening coordination on maritime security and disaster response.
Officials said the expanding partnership reflects increasing strategic convergence between the two democracies.
Looking Ahead
Government representatives from both countries will now begin implementing the new agreements through ministerial consultations and sector-specific working groups.
Analysts believe the announcements represent one of the most significant advances in India–Australia relations, with cooperation expected to expand further in defence, clean energy, technology and trade over the coming years.
The strengthened partnership is also expected to create new opportunities for businesses, researchers and investors while reinforcing regional economic resilience.
