Clash During Ganpati Procession in Mumbai’s Mazgaon After Eggs Allegedly Thrown; Police Deployed

Mumbai: Tension erupted in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area during a Ganpati idol arrival procession on Sunday night after organisers alleged that eggs were thrown at the procession from a nearby building, leading to a confrontation between groups and the deployment of a large police force.

The situation remained tense for more than four hours before police brought it under control by Monday morning, August 24, 2026. Security personnel continue to remain deployed in and around the locality as a precautionary measure.

What Happened in Mazgaon?

The incident occurred during the arrival procession of the Mazgaon Cha Maurya Ganpati Mandal.

According to festival organisers, the Ganpati idol had already arrived near the pandal when eggs were allegedly thrown towards the procession from a building located approximately 30 to 40 metres away.

The allegation quickly triggered anger among people participating in the procession, and a large crowd subsequently gathered in the area.

Vivek Rane, deputy secretary of the Ganpati Mandal, alleged that individuals from a nearby building were responsible and demanded strict action against those involved.

The identity of the person or persons who allegedly threw the eggs has not yet been officially established.

Thousands Gather on Streets

As news of the alleged incident spread, the crowd in Mazgaon grew rapidly.

According to The Times of India, approximately 10,000 to 15,000 people eventually gathered on the streets during the confrontation.

Police personnel reached the location and worked to disperse the gathering and prevent the situation from escalating further.

The confrontation and crowding continued for several hours before authorities succeeded in restoring order by Monday morning.

Police Deploy Additional Security

A substantial police presence has been maintained around the affected area and near the Ganpati pandal.

Officers have been deployed as a preventive measure to ensure that no further confrontation occurs during the ongoing Ganesh festival period.

Authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged egg-throwing incident.

Some reports said an FIR has been registered against unidentified persons and CCTV footage from nearby locations is being examined as part of the investigation.

Police had not, however, issued a detailed public statement on all aspects of the case at the time of the initial reports.

Ganpati Mandal Demands Action Within 24 Hours

Akhil Public Festival Committee president Hitesh Jadhav condemned the incident and called on authorities to identify those responsible quickly.

Jadhav said organisers had requested police action within 24 hours.

He also said Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar had extended support and that organisers had been assured that appropriate action would be taken.

The Mandal has asked authorities to examine nearby buildings and available CCTV footage to establish exactly what occurred.

Situation Under Control by Monday Morning

Despite the tense scenes overnight, police had brought the situation under control by Monday morning.

Additional personnel remained stationed in Mazgaon to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation.

There were no confirmed reports in the initial major coverage of serious injuries resulting from the confrontation.

Police are expected to continue monitoring the area closely during Ganesh festival processions, when large crowds are likely to gather across Mumbai.

Authorities Probe Allegations

The central issue in the case remains the allegation that eggs were deliberately thrown at the Ganpati procession.
