Jakarta, July 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome in Jakarta as he began high-level bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during his official visit to Indonesia. The two leaders held comprehensive discussions aimed at elevating the India–Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, culminating in the signing of several important agreements covering defence cooperation, space technology, critical minerals, maritime security, trade, and digital collaboration.
The visit marks another significant milestone in the growing partnership between the two Indo-Pacific nations, reflecting their shared commitment to regional peace, economic growth, and strategic cooperation.
High-Level Bilateral Talks
Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global developments. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in defence, maritime connectivity, supply chains, energy security, digital innovation, healthcare, education, and emerging technologies.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
Major Agreements Signed
Following the delegation-level talks, India and Indonesia signed multiple agreements designed to deepen cooperation in strategic sectors.
The agreements include collaboration on:
- Defence and military cooperation
- Maritime security and naval collaboration
- Space technology and satellite applications
- Critical minerals and resilient supply chains
- Trade and investment promotion
- Digital public infrastructure and emerging technologies
Officials said the agreements would strengthen long-term strategic cooperation and create new opportunities for businesses and industries in both countries.
Defence and Maritime Partnership
Defence cooperation emerged as one of the key highlights of the visit. Both countries agreed to enhance collaboration in defence manufacturing, military training, naval exercises, and maritime domain awareness.
The leaders also discussed strengthening cooperation to ensure the security of sea lanes and promote stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Boost to Economic Cooperation
India and Indonesia also agreed to expand bilateral trade and investment by encouraging cooperation in infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing, fintech, agriculture, and critical technologies.
Business leaders from both countries participated in parallel engagements aimed at identifying new investment opportunities and strengthening commercial partnerships.
Strengthening the Indo-Pacific Vision
The visit reinforces India’s Act East Policy and its broader vision of enhancing strategic engagement with Southeast Asian nations.
Prime Minister Modi described Indonesia as an important partner in India’s Indo-Pacific strategy, while President Prabowo emphasised the importance of expanding cooperation with India across defence, economic, and technological sectors.
The agreements signed during the visit are expected to further strengthen bilateral ties and contribute to peace, prosperity, and sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific region.
