New Delhi, July 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi on Thursday, signing a series of landmark agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in defence, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, clean energy, economic security, and emerging technologies. The summit marked another significant step in expanding the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership amid an evolving global geopolitical and economic landscape.
The two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collaboration in critical technologies, resilient supply chains, trade, investment, maritime security, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Landmark Agreements Signed
Following bilateral talks, India and Japan exchanged multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering economic security, clean energy, artificial intelligence, defence technology, healthcare, and research cooperation.
A major highlight was the announcement of the first-ever India–Japan defence co-development project, reflecting the growing strategic trust between the two countries.
Strong Focus on AI and Semiconductors
Artificial intelligence and semiconductor cooperation emerged as key pillars of the summit. Both countries agreed to leverage Japan’s expertise in precision manufacturing and India’s strength in software and digital innovation to promote responsible AI development and resilient semiconductor supply chains.
The leaders also emphasised cooperation in critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and next-generation digital technologies.
Economic Security and Investment
Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi adopted a joint roadmap on economic security to strengthen supply-chain resilience and reduce vulnerabilities in strategic sectors.
Japan also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to investment in India, with both sides aiming to accelerate cooperation in infrastructure, manufacturing, mobility, renewable energy, and industrial innovation.
Clean Energy and Green Growth
The summit placed significant emphasis on sustainable development and clean energy. Both nations agreed to expand cooperation in green technologies, bioenergy, hydrogen, and energy transition initiatives to support climate goals and sustainable economic growth.
The leaders also discussed collaboration in critical infrastructure and emerging industries that will shape future economic development.
Shared Vision for the Indo-Pacific
During the summit, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, highlighting the importance of maritime security, international law, and regional stability.
As members of the Quad, India and Japan agreed to continue working closely with like-minded partners to promote peace, security, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region.
Strengthening a Trusted Partnership
Addressing the media after the talks, Prime Minister Modi described Japan as one of India’s most trusted strategic partners, while Prime Minister Takaichi emphasised that closer cooperation would help both countries respond to global economic and technological challenges.
The outcomes of the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit are expected to further deepen bilateral cooperation and open new opportunities in defence, technology, innovation, clean energy, and trade.
