General Dhiraj Seth Takes Charge as Army Chief

New Delhi, June 30: General Dhiraj Seth on Tuesday officially assumed charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after completing his tenure. A highly decorated officer with nearly four decades of military service, General Seth takes over at a time when the Indian Army is accelerating modernisation and strengthening its operational capabilities.

General Seth, who was serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, was appointed by the Government of India earlier this month and formally took over command following the traditional handing-over ceremony at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi.

Distinguished Military Career

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, General Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. During his career, he has commanded formations at every level, serving in operational, strategic, and institutional roles across diverse terrains and conflict environments.

He has also played a key role in capability development, force restructuring, and long-term military planning, earning recognition for his contribution to the Indian Army’s modernisation efforts.

Focus on Modernisation and Future Warfare

Defence analysts expect General Seth to continue the Army’s emphasis on technology-driven warfare, integrated operations, indigenous capability development, and enhanced jointness among the armed forces.

His leadership comes at a time when the Army is expanding the use of advanced technologies, including drones, artificial intelligence, network-centric operations, and modern surveillance systems to meet evolving security challenges.

General Dwivedi Hands Over Command

Before relinquishing office, outgoing Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said future conflicts would increasingly require integrated and theatre-oriented operations involving close coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

He expressed confidence that the Indian Army would continue to evolve into a technologically advanced and combat-ready force under its new leadership.

Strategic Priorities Ahead

General Seth assumes office amid ongoing efforts to strengthen border infrastructure, improve operational preparedness, and enhance indigenous defence production under the government’s self-reliance initiatives.

Officials said the Army will continue focusing on operational readiness, force transformation, and strengthening India’s defence posture in an evolving regional security environment.

New Chapter for the Indian Army

The appointment of General Dhiraj Seth marks the beginning of a new leadership chapter for the Indian Army. Defence experts believe his extensive command experience and focus on future warfare will help guide the force through its next phase of transformation while maintaining high standards of operational excellence.
