Employee Unions Seek ₹69,000 Minimum Basic Pay

Bhubaneswar, July 5: Employee unions representing Central Government staff have presented a fresh set of demands before the 8th Central Pay Commission, including a proposal to raise the minimum basic salary to ₹69,000 per month. The demands were submitted during a consultation meeting held in Bhubaneswar, where union representatives outlined their expectations for the upcoming pay revision.

The consultation forms part of the Pay Commission’s ongoing exercise to gather suggestions from employee organisations, pensioners’ associations, and other stakeholders before finalising its recommendations to the Central Government.

Demand for Higher Minimum Basic Salary

One of the key proposals put forward by employee unions is to increase the minimum basic pay from the current level to ₹69,000, citing rising living costs, inflation, and changing economic conditions.

Union representatives argued that the revised salary structure should reflect the increasing cost of housing, healthcare, education, transportation, and other essential expenses faced by government employees.

Other Key Demands

Apart from the minimum salary revision, employee organisations also sought:

  • A higher fitment factor for salary revision.
  • Improved pension benefits for retired employees.
  • Revision of allowances in line with inflation.
  • Better career progression and promotion opportunities.
  • Strengthening of social security and welfare measures for government staff.

The unions said these reforms would improve employee morale and enhance the efficiency of public administration.

Consultation Process Underway

The 8th Pay Commission has been holding consultations with stakeholders across different regions of the country to understand employee concerns and gather suggestions before preparing its report.

Officials indicated that views received during these interactions will be examined along with financial considerations and administrative requirements before recommendations are submitted to the government.

Impact on Central Government Employees

The recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are expected to affect millions of Central Government employees and pensioners across the country.

While employee unions have sought substantial revisions in salaries and benefits, the final recommendations will be determined after a comprehensive review by the Commission and subsequent approval by the Central Government.

Awaiting Final Recommendations

The consultation in Bhubaneswar marks another important step in the Pay Commission’s nationwide engagement process. Employee organisations expressed hope that their concerns would be adequately reflected in the Commission’s final report.

The government is expected to continue consultations with various stakeholders before the 8th Pay Commission finalises its recommendations.
