US Wants Indian Visa Applicants to Keep Social Media Public

US visa policy

The United States government has made a new rule for  people  applying for an F, M, or J non-immigrant visa  from India who are applying for a visa. A visa is a special permission that allows someone to travel, live, or study in another country. If someone from India wants to go to the US, they now need to make sure that their social media profiles are set to “public.” This means anyone, including US officers, can see what they post online.

This new rule was shared by the US Consulate in India. They said that when officers are checking visa applications, they sometimes need to look at a person’s social media accounts. If the profiles are private, the officers may not be able to see the posts. Because of that, it could slow down the process or even make it hard to approve the visa.

Social media includes apps and websites like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter (now called X), and others. Many people keep their social media profiles private so only their friends or family can see what they post. But now, if someone wants a visa to visit or study in the US, they are being asked to change their settings to the public, at least while their application is being reviewed.

Why This Rule Matters

The US officers say this rule helps them better understand who the person is. They want to know more about the applicant’s background, activities, and interests. They believe looking at someone’s online posts can give extra information that is not written on the visa forms. This is especially important when they want to be sure that the person is honest and not trying to do anything bad in the US.

Some people feel this is a fair request, especially for safety reasons. They think that if someone is planning to live or travel to another country, it is okay for that country to check their online behavior. But others feel it is an invasion of privacy. They think people should have the right to keep their social media private and still get a visa.

Many young people in India were surprised to hear about this rule. Some even joked online, saying things like “Now I have to delete my memes!” or “Time to clean my Instagram!” But others are a bit worried. They think that something they posted long ago could now be seen and judged by officers in another country.

The US Consulate has not said that everyone MUST change their privacy settings, but they strongly suggest it. They said that if someone doesn’t make their social media public, it might cause delays or extra questions during the visa process.

This rule is not only for Indians. The US asks people from many countries to share their social media information when applying for visas. The rule was first introduced in 2020, but now they are reminding people about it again.

Some experts say people should be more careful about what they post online. Even without visa rules, many schools, jobs, and governments look at social media to learn more about someone. That is why it’s always good to think before posting anything.

For now, if someone in India is planning to apply for a US visa — whether for study, work, or vacation they should remember this new rule. Making social media public, at least during the visa check, could help the process go faster and smoother. In the end, being honest and careful online is important, especially when applying for something as serious as a visa.
