Ahead of the start of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the BCCI has given a big relief by taking a decision in the interest of the captains of the cricket team. Now captains will not be banned due to slow over-rate. According to a report in Cricbuzz, there will be no punishment for slow over-rates on captains in IPL 2025. Earlier, the captain was banned for one match for slow over-rate in three matches in the IPL, but now the BCCI has changed this rule.
Change for Slow Over Rate
In IPL 2025 (IPL 2025), captains will no longer face a ban due to slow over-rate. According to the earlier rules, if a team was found guilty of slow over-rate in three matches in a season, the captain was banned for one match. In the first match, 20 per cent of the captain’s match fee was deducted for a slow over-rate and in the second match, it was increased to 50 per cent. If this mistake happened for the third time, the captain had to face a ban for one match. But this will no longer be the case in IPL 2025. The decision was taken at a meeting of the BCCI top brass. Now, in case of slow over rate, the captain will be given demerit points and only in very serious cases the captain will be banned. This change will give relief to the captains, as they will no longer have to face punishment for slow over-rate every time.
Ball-tampering ban lifted
Another important change has been made in IPL 2025, and that is to allow bowlers to use saliva on the ball. The BCCI has now lifted this ban imposed in 2020 and the bowlers have again got the freedom to apply saliva on the ball in the 18th season of IPL. This restriction was imposed earlier due to Covid-19, but now the BCCI has taken this decision keeping in mind the situation.

The use of new balls
Another significant change this season is that two new balls will now be used in each innings. A new ball will be used for the first 10 overs while the second new ball will be used for the next 10 overs. This change is aimed at improving the speed and quality of the game. This will give both teams an opportunity to play in similar conditions, as every team will get the same advantage while playing with the new ball.
Impact Player Rules
The impact player rule has also been continued in IPL 2025. Many cricket pundits and fans were of the view that the BCCI could consider doing away with this rule, but the BCCI has retained it this season as well. Under this rule, any team has the option to include an extra player during the match, which helps in bringing a change in the team’s strategy. This rule provides the team with more flexibility during the match, especially when the players of the team are struggling with any injury or fatigue. These changes made by the BCCI for the captains in IPL 2025 will definitely make the game even more exciting and interesting. The change in the policy of ban on slow over rate and the exemption of the use of saliva will bring a new turn in the way of the game. At the same time, the use of an impact player and two new balls will also enhance the strategic approach in matches. These changes will provide a new challenge to the players and teams and provide a better cricketing experience to the spectators.
