GUWAHATI, September 6: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan began a four-day visit to the Northeast on Sunday, starting with Assam, where he addressed the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Geetanagar College in Guwahati.
During his address, the Vice President stressed that educational institutions must go beyond preparing students only for employment and focus on creating responsible citizens for democracy and society.
Quality Education and Character Building in Focus
Radhakrishnan said quality education, research and character building are essential for India’s progress.
He emphasised that education should equip students not only with professional skills but also with values, social responsibility and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the nation.
Vice President Highlights Nari Shakti
The Vice President also highlighted the increasing participation and achievements of women in higher education.
He described the trend as an important reflection of Nari Shakti, saying genuine empowerment comes when women receive the education and opportunities required to become self-reliant.
Assam’s Growth Highlighted
Referring to Assam’s development, Radhakrishnan said the state’s economy has expanded significantly in recent years.
He noted that Assam’s economy grew by around 45% over the last five years, while per capita income rose by approximately 54% between 2021-22 and 2024-25.
Northeast Important for Viksit Bharat 2047
The Vice President linked the region’s development with India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
He said inclusive development of every state and region, particularly the Northeast, would be essential for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Four-State Northeast Tour Begins
Radhakrishnan’s visit runs from September 6 to 9 and covers Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
On September 6, he is scheduled to attend the Convocation Ceremony of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences in Guwahati after the Geetanagar College programme.
Gauhati University and Shillong Next
On September 7, the Vice President will attend a foundation-stone laying programme at Gauhati University and interact with students, faculty members and leading citizens.
He will later travel to Shillong, Meghalaya, where he is scheduled to attend a public reception and cultural programme at Soso Tham Auditorium.
Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh Also on Itinerary
On September 8, Radhakrishnan will visit Imphal, including the INA Museum and War Memorial at Moirang and Sainik School Imphal, before travelling to Itanagar.
His tour concludes on September 9 with a special session of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and visits to cultural and educational institutions in Itanagar.
The four-day visit combines academic, cultural and public engagements while highlighting the strategic importance of education and inclusive development across the Northeast.
