The Central Government has approved a one-year extension in the service of Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, ensuring continuity in the country’s top administrative leadership. The decision was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the official orders, T. V. Somanathan will continue as Cabinet Secretary beyond 30 August 2026 until 30 August 2027, while Govind Mohan will remain Home Secretary beyond 22 August 2026 until 22 August 2027. The extensions have been granted under the relevant service rules in the public interest.
Continuity in Governance
The government said the decision aims to maintain administrative stability at a time when several major policy initiatives, infrastructure projects, and national security matters are underway.
As the country’s senior-most civil servant, the Cabinet Secretary coordinates the functioning of various ministries, oversees implementation of Cabinet decisions, and ensures effective coordination between the Centre and state governments.

T. V. Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has previously served as Finance Secretary and Expenditure Secretary before taking charge as Cabinet Secretary in 2024.
Govind Mohan has played a key role in handling internal security, disaster response, and administrative coordination within the Ministry of Home Affairs since assuming office as Home Secretary.
