Sharjeel Imam was booked under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the IPC on charges of conspiracy behind the 2020 communal riots that took place in northeast Delhi following protests against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and was detained on January 28, 2020. His bail plea is pending since 2022. And for the last 2 years, the hearing has been postponed several times in the High Court.
