Supreme Court grants bail Baba Asaram on medical grounds

The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu till March 31 on medical grounds in a 2013 rape case. 

What’s the case? 

The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to Asaram Bapu on medical grounds. Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a girl student of his gurukul. He has been granted bail on medical grounds. Asaram is currently lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail and is undergoing treatment at the Bhagat Ki Kothi hospital. His lawyer said that Asaram is a heart patient and has had heart attacks in the past. The Supreme Court has also ordered that the police will be deployed during the bail period so that there is no disturbance. The court has made it clear that after being released on bail, Asaram will not tamper with evidence and will not meet his followers. 

Asaram had earlier filed a plea seeking suspension of the life sentence awarded to him by the trial court in the 2013 rape case. 

Sentenced in January 2023 

In January 2023, a sessions court had convicted Asaram in a rape case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The case was filed by a woman living in his ashram near Gandhinagar. The high court had also refused to grant any relief considering his age and health. The court had also taken cognisance of other cases, including the killing of two boys at the Sabarmati Ashram and attacks on witnesses and relatives of the victims.

Asaram’s plea 

In his petition, Asaram said he was the victim of a conspiracy and the rape allegations were false. He also argued that there was a delay of 12 years in filing the complaint, which was wrongly accepted by the trial court.
