Seychelles Marks 50th National Day with PM Modi Attending as Guest of Honour

Victoria, Seychelles, June 27: Seychelles celebrated the 50th anniversary of its National Day with grand ceremonies in the capital, Victoria, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the celebrations as the Guest of Honour. The visit marked a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between India and Seychelles and highlighted the growing strategic cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi joined Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan, senior government officials, foreign dignitaries, and members of the diplomatic community during the National Day parade and official commemorative events.

Grand National Day Celebrations

The celebrations featured a ceremonial military parade, cultural performances, traditional music, and displays showcasing Seychelles’ rich heritage and national achievements over the past five decades.

Thousands of citizens gathered in Victoria to witness the event, while government leaders reaffirmed their commitment to democracy, sustainable development, and regional cooperation.

PM Modi Holds Bilateral Talks

On the sidelines of the National Day celebrations, Prime Minister Modi held bilateral discussions with President Ramkalawan to review the progress of India-Seychelles relations.

The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in maritime security, defence, renewable energy, healthcare, digital technology, education, and capacity building. They also reviewed ongoing Indian-assisted infrastructure and development projects in Seychelles.

Maritime Security Remains a Key Priority

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

India has been a longstanding partner in supporting Seychelles through coastal surveillance systems, defence training, hydrographic cooperation, and maritime capacity-building initiatives. The discussions also focused on ensuring safe sea lanes, combating piracy, illegal fishing, and enhancing disaster response capabilities.

Several Agreements Expected

Officials indicated that multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as digital connectivity, education, healthcare, climate resilience, and sustainable development are expected to be signed during the visit.

These agreements are aimed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation and promoting long-term economic and strategic partnerships.

Strengthening India-Seychelles Friendship

Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the National Day celebrations underscores India’s commitment to deepening engagement with island nations in the Indian Ocean under its SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision.

The visit is expected to further enhance diplomatic ties, people-to-people exchanges, and collaboration across multiple sectors, reinforcing the special relationship between India and Seychelles.
