Omar Abdullah Reveals His Seat for the Jammu-Kashmir Polls

The election bugle has sounded in Jammu and Kashmir. Assembly elections are going to be held here after 10 years. Actually, this is the first election after the removal of Article 370 on 5 August 2019. After the announcement of election dates by the Election Commission, all the political parties have started releasing the list of their candidates. In such a situation, the National Conference has also released the second list of 32 candidates. The special thing about this list is that it also includes the name of National Conference Vice President and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah. He will contest the upcoming assembly elections from the Ganderbal assembly seat of Jammu and Kashmir. Well, with this, Omar Abdullah had dismissed the speculation of contesting the assembly elections. He had said that “As long as Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory, I will not contest elections.” There will be a friendly contest on 5 seats.

On Monday, National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah released the first list. In which the names of candidates for 18 assembly constituencies including Rajpora, Pampore, Pulwama, and Shopian were announced. The important thing is that according to the seat-sharing formula in the assembly elections, the National Conference will contest on 51 seats while Congress will field its candidates on 32 seats. And there will be a friendly contest on 5 seats. On the remaining seats, CPI(M) and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party will field their candidates on one seat each.

From 2009 to 2015 Omar Abdullah served as Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister.

It is worth noting that Omar Abdullah, who has been a Lok Sabha MP three times, was also the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009 to 2015. Not only the Chief Minister, he has also been the President of the National Conference. He has represented Ganderbal seat from 2008 to 2014 and Beerwah assembly constituencies from 2014 to 2019.

Assembly elections will be held in 3 phases.

The Election Commission of India has announced that it will conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in three phases. First phase notifications have been given. In the first phase, voting will be held on 18 September in 24 assembly seats of the valley and Jammu region. Voting for the second phase will be held on 25 September, and the final phase of votes will be cast on 1 October, and counting of votes will be done on 4 October.
