Nana Patekar Dies at 75 After Cardiac Arrest; Maharashtra Announces State Funeral

Goa, October 8, 2026: Veteran actor Nana Patekar died on Thursday morning at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. Doctors administered CPR for around 45 minutes, but he could not be revived. His son Malhar Patekar confirmed the death.

Cardiac Arrest at Goa Residence

Patekar suffered a severe cardiac arrest early Thursday morning at his home in Goa.

Medical teams attempted prolonged resuscitation, but he was declared dead at around 5:20 AM. A medico-legal procedure and post-mortem examination were initiated to establish the precise medical circumstances.

Maharashtra Announces State Funeral

The Maharashtra government has announced that Nana Patekar will be accorded a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to Indian theatre and cinema.

Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar announced the decision as tributes poured in from across the country.

President Murmu and PM Modi Pay Tribute

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among those who mourned the actor’s death.

Film personalities, political leaders and fans also shared tributes remembering his distinctive performances and contribution to Indian cinema.

Nearly Five Decades in Indian Cinema

Born Vishwanath Patekar, Nana began his career in theatre before making his film debut with Gaman in 1978.

Over the decades, he became known for intense performances and an unmistakable dialogue-delivery style across both Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Memorable Films Defined His Career

Among his best-known films were Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Raajneeti and Welcome.

His performance in Parinda earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Acclaimed Work in Marathi Cinema

Patekar was equally celebrated for his Marathi films, with Natsamrat becoming one of the defining performances of his later career.

He remained active in films until shortly before his death.

Akshay Kumar described Patekar’s death as the “end of an era,” while several actors and filmmakers remembered him as a performer whose intensity and authenticity were difficult to replicate.

Patekar was also associated with humanitarian work through the Naam Foundation, which supported farmers and families affected by drought and financial hardship in Maharashtra.

His death marks the loss of one of the most distinctive performers of Hindi and Marathi cinema.
