Mass Shooting Plot Targeting Hindu Temple in Illinois Foiled After Rifle Jams; Extremist Manifesto Recovered

Illinois, October 15, 2026: US authorities say they foiled an alleged mass-shooting plot targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area of Illinois after a rifle reportedly malfunctioned and a co-worker alerted law enforcement. Alexandros Paporakis, 19, has been arrested and charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. Investigators also recovered an alleged manifesto containing white-supremacist and extremist views targeting South Asians, particularly people of Indian origin.

Suspect Allegedly Planned Attack on Hindu Temple

Prosecutors allege that Paporakis discussed carrying out a mass shooting at what he described as a large Hindu temple in Aurora.

Police identified a Hindu place of worship in the area as a potential target. However, the specific intended location has not been officially confirmed and remains under investigation.

Rifle Reportedly Jammed Before Attack

Investigators allege that Paporakis travelled towards the temple area carrying an AR-style rifle and attempted to use the weapon, but it malfunctioned.

He allegedly returned home afterwards and searched online for instructions on how to clear the weapon’s jam. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the reported attempt and the suspect’s alleged preparations.

Co-Worker’s Alert Helps Police Intervene

A key development in the case came when a co-worker reported disturbing communications to law enforcement.

According to investigators, the suspect had discussed carrying out a mass shooting and subsequently shared information about the failed weapon attempt. Police departments in Palatine and Mount Prospect coordinated their response, leading to his arrest.

Police Recover Rifle and Ammunition

A search of the suspect’s residence reportedly led investigators to recover a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armour and other tactical equipment.

Authorities also reportedly found items bearing Nazi-linked imagery. The recovered material is being examined as part of the investigation into the alleged plot.

Alleged Manifesto Contains Extremist Ideology

Investigators recovered an eight-page document attributed to Paporakis titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto).”

According to reports, the document contained white-supremacist and extremist views, including references to violence against South Asians, particularly people of Indian descent. Investigators are examining the document to understand the suspect’s alleged motives and intentions.

Suspect Allegedly Expressed Hatred Towards Indians

Prosecutors allege that co-workers told investigators the accused had repeatedly made racist remarks targeting Indians and discussed Nazi ideology and armed violence.

These allegations form part of the criminal case and have not yet been proven in court.

Arrest Made on October 11

Paporakis was arrested on October 11 while leaving his residence, according to reports.

A judge subsequently ordered him to remain in custody, and his next court appearance is scheduled for October 30. The legal proceedings will determine how the allegations are addressed in court.

FBI Joins Investigation

The FBI’s Chicago field office is assisting local law enforcement with the investigation.

Authorities are reviewing electronic communications, recovered weapons and other evidence to establish the full scope of the alleged plot and determine whether additional charges may be warranted.

Hindu Temples Alerted to Potential Threat

Aurora Police were informed of the alleged threat and contacted Hindu places of worship in the area.

Police said they had not identified any continuing public threat linked to the case. Authorities continue to assess the available evidence and the circumstances surrounding the alleged plan.

Indian Consulate Welcomes Police Action

The Consulate General of India in Chicago praised the timely intervention by US law-enforcement agencies, according to reports.

The consulate also said it was monitoring developments and remained in contact with members of the Indian diaspora.

Hindu Groups Call for Greater Vigilance

Hindu-American organisations have urged temples and community groups to review security arrangements and report suspicious behaviour promptly.

The alleged plot has raised concerns among community members about protecting religious institutions, particularly during periods when large numbers of people gather for religious and cultural celebrations.

Case Raises Concerns Over Hate-Motivated Violence

The case has renewed attention on threats allegedly motivated by extremist ideology and directed at religious and ethnic communities in the United States.

Investigators are continuing to examine the suspect’s alleged preparations, digital communications, weapons and potential target. The precise circumstances of the alleged plot and the evidence supporting the charges will be addressed through the ongoing legal process.
