Tariff Dispute: India shrugged off Trump’s tariff claim, said there is no agreement yet, talks are on

India trade talks

After taking oath as the President of America, US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on India, including Canada, Mexico and China, from April 2. Not only this, he also claimed that India has agreed to tariff cuts (Tariff Dispute). Whereas India says that “there has been no agreement with America on this issue yet.” However, talks are going on between the two countries. According to the information, two days after Trump’s claim, the Indian government told this to the parliamentary panel on Monday. While presenting its point before the parliamentary panel, the government said that “there has been no agreement on trade tariffs. Time till September has been sought to resolve this issue.” Well, in such a situation, the big question is what does Trump want to do? This question also arises because Trump had claimed that “India has agreed to tariff cuts.” On the other hand, India says on this matter that “there has been no such agreement till now.” According to the information, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs that “There has been no agreement so far between India and America to reduce tariffs significantly. Both are working towards a bilateral trade agreement. The focus is not only on the immediate tariff issue but also on long-term trade cooperation.”

Many members of the parliamentary committee asked Barthwal several questions on the US-India trade (tariff dispute) talks.

According to the information, many members of the committee asked Barthwal several questions on the US-India trade (Tariff Dispute) talks. On this question, he said that “India’s interests will be taken care of during the trade talks. He told the committee that “India is in favor of free trade. And wants liberalization of trade, which will help in increasing trade between the two countries. He said that “No one including America will benefit from breaking out of a tariff war, it can lead to recession.” Well, during this time some members of Parliament also asked the Commerce Secretary that “Why is India not raising its voice like Mexico and Canada against the US steps on customs?” On this bitter question, Barthwal said that “the two cases cannot be compared, because America has security concerns and border immigration issues with them.” During this, the Commerce Secretary told the committee that “India will protect such industries which are important for its domestic economy. India can reduce customs duty bilaterally but cannot do so multilaterally. That is why work is being done on a bilateral trade agreement.”
