UPI transaction rules to change from February 1, NPCI shares details

In today’s fast-paced life, digital payments have become an important part of our daily routine. In particular, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has made transactions much easier and faster. Now there is no need to carry cash anywhere and the payment is made in just one click. UPI is being used everywhere from villages to big cities. Millions of people use UPI every day. But from February 1, 2025, there is going to be a big change in the rules of UPI transactions, which will have a direct impact on common consumers.

What’s changing from February 1st?

The new guidelines regarding the transaction ID to be used in UPI transactions will come into effect from February 1, 2025. Now special characters like @, $, &, # will not be used in the transaction ID to be created by any UPI payment app. If a UPI app is still using these special characters, transactions made through them will not be accepted and will fail.The impact on consumersThis change will have a direct impact on those who are using UPI apps that still have a transaction ID with special characters. If the app does not implement this rule in time, the payments made from those apps can be rejected. Therefore, it is important that consumers ensure in time that the UPI app they use is updated in accordance with the new rules.

Why is this change being made?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the UPI services, has taken this step to make the UPI system standardized and more secure. NPCI wants all payment apps to use only alphanumeric characters and avoid special characters. This will keep the format of the transaction ID the same and prevent possible technical glitches.Some experts believe that this change has been made mainly for those merchant account holders who do large-scale transactions through UPI. However, this change will also have an impact on common consumers, as all UPI transactions take place under this system.The NPCI has clearly instructed all payment apps providing UPI services across the country that the transaction ID should contain only alphanumeric characters. If a UPI app does not follow this rule, any payment made through it can fail.NPCI has also said that it will be the responsibility of the apps providing UPI service to comply with the new rules. If they do not implement this change in time, their users may have problems with payments.

The change was confirmed in an official circular issued by NPCI on January 9, 2025. 

The circular said: “UPI payment apps were advised in March 2024 itself to use only alphanumeric characters for generating transaction IDs. It is compliant with UPI technical specifications and it is the responsibility of all service providers to ensure the same. Now from February 1, 2025, transaction IDs with special characters will be completely rejected by the system. “It is clear that UPI apps will have to comply with this rule as soon as possible, otherwise their users may face difficulties.

Transaction ID will be of 35 digits

Another change has been made in the format of UPI transaction ID. As per the new guidelines of NPCI, each UPI transaction ID should be of 35 digits.

• If the transaction ID of an app is less than or more than 35 digits, then that transaction will not be accepted and the transaction will be rejected.

• Also, no special character should be in the transaction ID.The changes being made by NPCI are aimed at making the UPI system more secure, systematic and effective. With these new rules, UPI transactions will be organized and streamlined.

• Reduce the chances of technical errors and fraud.Consumers will have a better and safer digital payment experience.

What should you do?

Update your UPI app – Make sure your UPI payment app is updated in line with the new rules.Be cautious while making payments – If there is a problem in any transaction, contact your bank or UPI service provider immediately. Also keep other payment options in mind – If a UPI app does not implement the new rules, use other digital payment options temporarily.In view of the increasing use of digital payments, the new rules for UPI transaction IDs are a significant change. The main objective of these rules, which will come into effect from February 1, 2025, is to make the payment system more organized and secure. All UPI users are advised to update their apps and be prepared for this change, so as to avoid any inconvenience.
