A major security challenge has arisen in Pakistan, where the Baloch Liberation Army has hijacked the Jaffar Express. There were more than 500 passengers on this train, out of which about 182 people are still in the possession of BLA. The incident has caused outrage in Pakistan.
How was the attack carried out?
According to Baloch Liberation Army spokesman Zaind Baloch, the operation was pre-planned. BLA fighters blew up railway tracks in Mashkaf, Dhadar and Bolan areas, halting the train. Soon after, armed members of the BLA seized the train and took the passengers hostage. According to the spokesperson, the operation was jointly carried out by three major units of the BLA – Majeed Brigade, STOS and Fateh Squad.
BLA’s claim and warning
The BLA has claimed that 20 Pakistani soldiers have been killed in this attack so far. They say they have taken hostage only those passengers who were Pakistan Army, Police, ISI or ATF personnel and were returning to Punjab on leave.
The BLA spokesperson also informed that women, children and passengers belonging to the Baloch community have been safely released.
Warning to Shehbaz Sharif government
The BLA has issued a stern warning to the Shahbaz Sharif government of Pakistan that if the Pakistan Army carries out any kind of army operation, the consequences will be serious. The spokesman threatened that if the Pakistan Army took any action against them, all the hostages would be killed.
In its final warning, the BLA made it clear that if the Pakistan Army’s air strikes were not stopped immediately, all hostages would be killed within the next hour. The BLA says the Pakistan Army will be solely responsible for the bloodshed.
The silence of the Pakistani army and police
So far, there has been no official statement from the Pakistani army or police after this major terrorist attack. This suggests that the Pakistani administration is still struggling to handle the situation.
Increased activity of BLA: a serious concern
The Baloch Liberation Army has long been fighting for its independence in Pakistan’s Balochistan region. The outfit has carried out several violent attacks against the Pakistani Army and administration. The BLA alleges that the Pakistan Army is doing injustice to Baloch civilians and exploiting their resources. Such a hijacking by the BLA has raised serious questions on the security arrangements in Pakistan.

Looking at the situation
- The Pakistani government now has two options.
- Interacting with BLA by halting Army operations
- Be prepared for attacks and possible casualties
The international community is closely monitoring the situation. The situation has become extremely sensitive for Pakistan as one wrong step can put the lives of hundreds of hostages at risk.
This is a big challenge for Pakistan. Now it will be important to see how the Pakistani administration resolves this crisis. Will the Shehbaz Sharif government adopt the path of dialogue or try to resolve this crisis through military action? The next few hours could prove to be decisive for this whole episode.
