In neighboring Bangladesh, there is a ruckus that is not likely to stop. Violent protests have erupted again. The incident reportedly took place around 9:30 pm on Tuesday. A mob of thousands of protesters demanding the removal of President Mohammad Shahabuddin went on a rampage in front of Bangabhaban, the official residence of the president. The situation was so tense that the police had to resort to lathicharge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. Two people, including a student, were injured in the shooting.
Thousands gathered to protest
In an interview to a Bengali daily last week, President Mohammad Shahabuddin said, I have no paperwork to prove that Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister before she fled the country in the wake of massive student-led protests in August.” Then what was it? This thing displeased the opponents of Sheikh Hasina. Protesters gathered in front of Bangabhaban on Tuesday afternoon, demanding the resignation of President Mohammad Shahabuddin. And thousands of people began to gather. Police reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesters, but the protestors broke through the barricades. Police used mild force and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.
Ban on political activities
Dhaka: A prominent student organization spearheading protests against the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh on Tuesday staged a demonstration in Dhaka demanding the removal of President Md. Shahabuddin for his comments on the resignation of the ousted prime minister. The protesters have also demanded a ban on the political activities of Hasina’s Awami League party and its allies. “The elections held in 2024, 2018 and 2024 under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina should be declared invalid, and the MPs who won in these elections should be disqualified,” the protesting students said.”
Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in India
It may be recalled that in July, there was a demand to abolish the quota system in government jobs in Bangladesh, and in protest against this, the student movement became fierce. On August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Bangladesh’s prime minister and took refuge in India. Following his resignation, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. On August 8, Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government.
