Major Fire Breaks Out in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar High-Rise; Three Hospitalised, Firecracker Suspected

Mumbai, November 7, 2026: A major fire broke out at a residential high-rise in Ghatkopar East, Mumbai, on Friday evening, leaving three people injured and forcing residents to evacuate the building. The blaze, reported at approximately 8:08 PM on November 6, was brought under control after an extensive firefighting operation.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, with conflicting preliminary accounts suggesting either a firecracker or an electrical short circuit.

Fire Breaks Out on Upper Floor of Residential Tower

The fire occurred in the Pant Nagar area of Ghatkopar East, near Vallabh Baug Lane.

According to a statement from Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde’s office, the blaze started on the 20th floor of the 21-storey Royal Altezza residential building.

Some initial reports identified the location as the 23rd floor of Kukreja Palace. However, later reports citing the mayor’s office identified the affected building as Royal Altezza.

Firefighters responded to the emergency as flames and smoke spread through the upper section of the building.

Three Residents Hospitalised

Three people were injured in the incident.

Sainath Awale, 45, suffered approximately 27% burn injuries and was admitted to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar East.

Two other residents, Nirav Lodaya, 34, and Rajesh Lodaya, 47, were taken to Zynova Hospital in Ghatkopar West after experiencing smoke inhalation and suffocation.

All three were reported to be in stable condition in the latest available updates.

No fatalities were reported.

Eight Fire Engines Deployed to Control Blaze

The Mumbai Fire Brigade deployed at least eight fire engines, along with additional firefighting equipment, to tackle the flames.

The fire was initially classified as a Level-I emergency at approximately 8:30 PM.

As the situation intensified, officials upgraded the response to Level-II at 8:52 PM.

Firefighters worked for several hours to control the blaze, which was extinguished at approximately 11:10 PM.

Emergency personnel also searched the building to ensure that no residents remained trapped inside.

Firecracker or Short Circuit? Cause Under Investigation

The cause of the fire remains disputed.

Mumbai Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar suggested that a stray firecracker may have entered a flat and triggered the blaze.

Officials initially suspected that a rocket-type firecracker could have caused the incident.

However, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde attributed the fire to an electrical short circuit.

These differing accounts indicate that the precise cause has not yet been conclusively established.

A detailed investigation is expected to examine the origin of the flames and the circumstances that allowed the fire to spread.

Residents Evacuated as Flames Spread

The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Residents, including senior citizens and people requiring medical assistance, were moved to safety.

Some residents described hearing disturbances and seeing glass fragments falling from the upper floors.

Emergency personnel carried out search operations to check whether anyone remained inside.

The evacuation helped prevent further injuries during the incident.

Building’s Fire Safety System Raises Questions

The incident has also raised concerns about the residential tower’s internal firefighting arrangements.

According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the building’s firefighting system was initially not functioning.

Chief Fire Officer Ambulgekar said the system began operating after firefighters intervened.

Residents questioned why the internal safety equipment had not operated properly when the fire started.

Officials are expected to examine whether any deficiencies in maintenance or emergency preparedness contributed to the difficulties faced during the operation.

Traffic Congestion Creates Challenges for Firefighters

Residents also raised concerns about delays in the arrival of firefighting equipment.

Traffic congestion in the area reportedly complicated emergency access.

Some residents said vehicles parked near the building had to be moved to create space for rescue operations.

The incident has renewed attention to emergency vehicle access in densely populated residential neighbourhoods.

Mayor Ritu Tawde Visits Fire Site

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the affected location and reviewed the firefighting and rescue operations.

Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, electricity department, Public Works Department and local civic authorities participated in the emergency response.

Officials coordinated efforts to control the fire, evacuate residents and assess potential hazards.

The authorities are also expected to determine the extent of property damage.

Fire Safety Concerns Ahead of Diwali

The incident occurred during the festive period ahead of Diwali, when firecracker use typically increases.

Although a firecracker has been suggested as a possible cause, investigators have not conclusively established that fireworks triggered this particular blaze.

The incident highlights the importance of keeping balconies and windows secure during fireworks displays and ensuring that emergency exits remain accessible.

Fire safety authorities generally advise residents of high-rise buildings to maintain working fire alarms, extinguishers and internal firefighting systems.

Latest Update on Ghatkopar High-Rise Fire

As of the morning of November 7, 2026, the fire had been extinguished, all three injured residents were reported to be stable, and authorities were examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigators have not yet established whether a firecracker, an electrical fault or another factor caused the blaze.

The full extent of structural and property damage also remains to be determined.

The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of firefighting infrastructure and emergency preparedness in Mumbai’s residential high-rises.
