Rahul Gandhi Challenges PM Modi to Open Debate After ‘Obstructionist Side’ Remark

New Delhi, November 3, 2026: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open debate after the Prime Minister accused the Opposition of becoming an “obstructionist side” and alleged that anti-India forces were using misinformation and social media to destabilise the country.

Rahul Gandhi Challenges Modi to Debate

Gandhi responded through a post on X, saying he was ready to debate the Prime Minister “any stage, any time”.

He also alleged that Modi had benefited from foreign support and claimed that foreign financial and social-media interests were helping sustain his government. Gandhi did not provide evidence for these allegations in the remarks reported by news organisations.

Modi Had Called Opposition an ‘Obstructionist Side’

The exchange followed remarks made by Modi during Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat.

Modi said an Opposition in a democracy has a responsibility to question government policy, but accused opposition parties of turning from a “virodh paksh” into an “avrodh paksh”, or obstructionist side.

PM Raises Questions Over Foreign Links

Modi also referred to alleged foreign attempts to influence India and questioned who certain political leaders were meeting during overseas visits.

He claimed that social media was being used to circulate rumours and damage India’s image, though his remarks did not name Rahul Gandhi directly in every instance.

Rahul Gandhi Turns Allegation Back on PM

Gandhi rejected Modi’s accusations and turned the foreign-support allegation against the Prime Minister.

He claimed that India’s financial system was supported by foreign interests and that foreign social-media platforms backed Modi, before challenging him to publicly debate these claims.

Political Clash Intensifies

The latest exchange adds to an increasingly confrontational political debate between the ruling BJP and Congress.

Both sides have repeatedly accused each other of undermining democratic institutions, spreading misinformation and relying on external narratives to strengthen their political positions.

Foreign Influence Becomes New Political Flashpoint

Claims about foreign interference have increasingly become part of political arguments in India, particularly around social media, overseas meetings and international funding.

However, the allegations exchanged in the latest Modi-Gandhi confrontation remain political claims, and no supporting evidence establishing the broader accusations was presented in the reports cited.

Debate Challenge Adds to Government-Opposition Standoff

Gandhi’s open-debate challenge is likely to keep the confrontation in focus as Parliament and political parties prepare for further battles over electoral, economic and governance issues.

There has been no indication so far that Modi has accepted Gandhi’s challenge to a public debate.
