SpaceX in Talks to Buy Boost Mobile or Use Its Network, Report Says

Washington, November 2, 2026: Elon Musk’s SpaceX is reportedly in talks with EchoStar about either buying its Boost Mobile wireless business or gaining access to its network, a move that could help the company accelerate plans for a hybrid satellite-and-terrestrial mobile service.

Talks Could Help SpaceX Enter US Wireless Market

According to reports, SpaceX has discussed several options with EchoStar, including acquiring Boost Mobile outright or using its network infrastructure.

Boost Mobile currently relies partly on network capacity leased from AT&T and T-Mobile, which could give SpaceX a faster route into the US mobile market.

Starlink Mobile Could Combine Satellite and Ground Networks

SpaceX is working on a broader plan to launch Starlink Mobile, combining direct satellite connectivity with traditional terrestrial cellular coverage.

Such a hybrid model could help improve service in areas where satellite-only connections remain weaker, especially indoors and in dense urban environments.

Boost Mobile Brings Millions of Customers

EchoStar had around 7.38 million wireless subscribers at the end of the second quarter, mainly through Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile.

An acquisition could therefore give SpaceX an existing customer base, retail presence and distribution network instead of forcing it to build those capabilities from scratch.

Musk Reportedly Met EchoStar Chairman

Elon Musk reportedly met EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month to discuss the potential arrangement.

However, any deal involving Boost Mobile’s existing network agreements could still require approval from AT&T and T-Mobile because those contracts may not automatically transfer to a new owner.

SpaceX Recently Bought $8 Billion in Spectrum

The discussions follow SpaceX’s recent agreement to acquire about $8 billion worth of wireless spectrum licences, strengthening its ability to develop mobile connectivity services.

The spectrum purchase has increased expectations that SpaceX intends to challenge established US wireless operators more directly.

Major Carriers Have Resisted SpaceX Requests

Reports indicate that Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile have so far resisted SpaceX requests for broader access to their networks.

That makes a deal with Boost Mobile particularly attractive, as it could provide SpaceX with an alternative route into the terrestrial wireless market.

Significant Investment Still Required

Even with access to Boost Mobile, SpaceX would still need to spend heavily on ground infrastructure, customer service, handset subsidies, marketing and network integration.

Analysts say competing with established US carriers would require substantial investment beyond SpaceX’s existing satellite network.

Deal Could Reshape US Telecom Competition

If completed, the deal could significantly change competition in the US wireless industry by adding SpaceX as a direct challenger to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

For now, discussions remain exploratory, and neither SpaceX nor EchoStar has announced a final agreement.
