New Delhi, October 22, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in New Delhi on Thursday as India and Poland moved to deepen cooperation in defence, trade, investment, technology and clean energy. Tusk’s visit marks the first trip by a Polish prime minister to India in 16 years.
The talks build on the Strategic Partnership announced during Modi’s visit to Poland in August 2024 and are aimed at turning broader political ties into more concrete economic and industrial cooperation.
Defence Cooperation Takes Centre Stage
Defence emerged as one of the most important areas of discussion during the meeting.
Poland has significantly expanded its defence sector amid the continuing security challenges in Eastern Europe and is looking to work more closely with Indian companies on military equipment, production and technology.
Poland Eyes Joint Defence Production With India
Polish officials have indicated that Warsaw wants to move beyond traditional buyer-seller relationships and explore joint production and common defence platforms with India.
The discussions are expected to align with India’s push for domestic manufacturing and greater technology transfer under its defence-indigenisation programmes.
Trade and Investment Also High on Agenda
Modi and Tusk are also focusing on expanding bilateral trade and encouraging greater investment between the two economies.
Poland is one of India’s important economic partners in Central Europe, while Indian companies have expanded their presence in sectors including information technology, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing.
Both sides are looking for opportunities to increase business activity beyond their traditional areas of cooperation.
Technology Cooperation Expected to Expand
Technology is another major area of interest.
India and Poland are exploring stronger collaboration in advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, research, innovation and resilient supply chains.
Officials have also discussed cooperation in sectors that can support both civilian and strategic requirements.
Clean Energy Partnership in Focus
Poland is also seeking deeper collaboration with India in clean and renewable energy.
The discussions are expected to include investment opportunities and technology partnerships as both countries work to reduce emissions while ensuring reliable energy supplies.
Shipbuilding and Port Infrastructure Among Emerging Areas
India and Poland are exploring cooperation in shipbuilding, marine technology and port infrastructure.
These sectors are considered particularly important because some technologies can have both commercial and strategic applications, creating opportunities for broader industrial cooperation.
Tusk’s First India Visit as PM in 16 Years
Tusk’s visit carries diplomatic significance because the last visit by a Polish prime minister to India took place in 2010.
His current trip follows Modi’s historic visit to Warsaw in August 2024, when the two countries elevated their ties to a Strategic Partnership.
India-Poland Strategic Partnership Builds Momentum
The Strategic Partnership established in 2024 included an action plan covering political dialogue, trade, defence, technology, education and people-to-people exchanges.
The latest talks are intended to accelerate implementation of that framework and identify specific projects that can move forward in the coming years.
Poland’s Strategic Importance Has Grown
Poland’s importance to India has increased because of its economic growth, strategic location in Central Europe and role in European security.
The country borders Ukraine and Russia’s Kaliningrad region and has sharply increased defence spending in response to regional security concerns.
India-EU Relations Also Form Wider Backdrop
The visit also comes as India and the European Union work toward deeper economic cooperation.
Poland has supported stronger India-EU engagement and has been among the European countries encouraging progress on trade and investment ties with New Delhi.
Talks Could Lead to New Agreements
Officials from both countries have been working on potential outcomes in strategic sectors ahead of Tusk’s visit.
Defence, supply-chain resilience, marine technology, investment and innovation are among the areas where new announcements or agreements could emerge during the trip.
India and Poland Seek More Concrete Partnership
The Modi-Tusk meeting signals an effort by both governments to move the relationship from broad strategic declarations toward practical industrial, technological and commercial cooperation.
With defence manufacturing, clean energy and technology now becoming central pillars, the visit could shape the next phase of India-Poland relations.
