FIRs Filed Against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Over Alleged Assault on Police During Delhi Protest

New Delhi, October 8, 2026: Delhi Police have registered at least three FIRs against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over allegations that police personnel were assaulted and obstructed during an INDIA bloc protest in the national capital. The protest was part of the opposition’s continuing campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Police Cite Assault and Obstruction Charges

According to Delhi Police, the FIRs include allegations related to assaulting public servants and preventing police officers from carrying out their duties during the protest.

The cases were registered after clashes and scuffles were reported while opposition leaders and supporters attempted to move through heavily barricaded areas of central Delhi.

Rahul and Priyanka Detained During Protest

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among several opposition leaders detained during the demonstrations.

The protest marked another consecutive day of agitation against the Election Commission, with opposition leaders continuing to demand Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

Protest Linked to SIR Controversy

The demonstrations centre on allegations of irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Opposition parties have accused the poll body of compromising electoral transparency, while the Election Commission and BJP have rejected allegations of wrongdoing.

Heavy Security Across Central Delhi

Security has been significantly tightened as protests continue.

The government has deployed around 221 companies of Central Armed Police Forces, roughly 23,000 personnel, between October 8 and 12 to support Delhi Police and secure key government locations.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Security Also Increased

Security around Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has also been reinforced amid continuing demonstrations and fresh threat inputs.

Additional personnel have been stationed around his residence despite his existing Z-plus security cover.

INDIA Bloc Keeps Pressure on Election Commission

Opposition parties have indicated they will continue protests over the SIR issue.

The INDIA bloc is also preparing to take its concerns to President Droupadi Murmu as it seeks greater scrutiny of the Election Commission’s actions.

Political Tensions Continue to Rise

The FIRs against two of the Congress party’s most prominent leaders have added another layer to an already escalating political confrontation.

With continuing demonstrations, court proceedings and heavy security deployment, the dispute over electoral-roll revision is expected to remain a major national political issue.
