New Delhi, October 6, 2026: The INDIA bloc intensified its campaign against the Election Commission on Tuesday, with opposition MPs calling for a march in central Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a rollback of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Heavy police deployment and barricading were put in place around Parliament, Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission office ahead of the protest.
Opposition Targets SIR Process
The protest is centred on allegations that the SIR exercise has led to irregularities in voter-list revision and could affect eligible voters.
Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of acting without adequate transparency and have demanded that contentious changes linked to voter registration be reversed.
MPs Plan March to Election Commission Office
INDIA bloc MPs planned to march from Parliament’s Makar Dwar towards the Election Commission headquarters.
Police said more than five companies of paramilitary personnel, along with local police, had been deployed along expected routes.
Section 163 Remains in Force
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 remain in force in New Delhi district, meaning large gatherings are restricted.
Police have placed multi-layer barricades around Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission office to prevent escalation.
Supreme Court Scrutiny Adds Pressure
The controversy has also reached the Supreme Court.
The court has said it did not approve any modified version of Form 6 used for new voter registration and has sought Election Commission records to determine who made the disputed changes.
Form 6 Changes at Centre of Dispute
The disputed changes required applicants to answer whether they, their parents or grandparents appeared on electoral rolls during an earlier SIR.
Petitioners argue that Form 6 cannot be changed without amending the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, and have questioned how the altered version was introduced digitally.
Protests Continue in Delhi
The capital has witnessed protests over the issue since October 2.
Police said nine FIRs had been registered in connection with demonstrations over the previous five days, 18 people had been arrested and more than 300 detained and later released.
Election Commission Faces Growing Political Pressure
The SIR controversy has become a major point of political disagreement between the opposition and the Election Commission.
With street protests continuing and the Supreme Court examining disputed voter-registration procedures, the issue remains at the centre of political debate.
