MUMBAI, September 20: Three college students were killed and another critically injured after a BMW crashed into a divider on Mumbai’s Coastal Road and plunged nearly 75 feet early Sunday morning, police said. Preliminary findings suggest the car was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control.
Accident Occurred Around 5 AM
The crash took place at around 5 AM on September 20 while the four occupants were travelling northbound from Marine Drive.
Police said the BMW struck the outer wall of the Coastal Road before falling nearly 75 feet below. The accident occurred near the Lotus Jetty area.
Three Students Killed in Crash
The deceased were identified by The Indian Express as:
- Sanay Gujjar, 21
- Aditya Jakasania, 19
- Dhairya Sheth, 17
Gujjar was reportedly driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Police said Gujjar, Sheth and the surviving passenger were students pursuing BBA courses at a management college in Vile Parle. Gujjar was originally from Ahmedabad and was staying in Mumbai as a paying guest.
Fourth Student in Critical Condition
The fourth occupant, identified as Aditya Oswal, 23, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries.
He was taken to Nair Hospital, where he was admitted to the trauma ward and remained in critical condition at the time of reporting.
Police Suspect Overspeeding
Investigators said their preliminary assessment indicates that the BMW was being driven at a very high speed before the crash.
Tardeo Police senior inspector Meena Jagtap said it appeared the driver lost control because of the speed, after which the car struck the Coastal Road’s outer wall and fell approximately 75 feet.
The exact speed of the vehicle has not yet been officially disclosed.
BMW Belonged to Driver’s Family
Police said the luxury car belonged to Gujjar’s family.
Investigators are examining the circumstances leading to the crash and are expected to review available CCTV footage, vehicle condition and other evidence as part of the inquiry.
Families Informed, Witness Statements Being Recorded
Mumbai Police have informed the families of the deceased students.
Officials are also recording statements from the victims’ friends and other potential witnesses to understand where the group had been before the accident and establish the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Coastal Road Speeding Under Focus
The fatal accident has again brought attention to high-speed driving on Mumbai’s Coastal Road.
Earlier incidents involving luxury and high-performance cars have also been reported on the corridor, including cases where police registered offences for alleged rash and dangerous driving.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into Sunday’s crash, while the surviving student remains under medical treatment.
