NEW DELHI, September 15: India is observing National Engineers’ Day 2026 today to commemorate the 165th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the country’s most celebrated civil engineers and statesmen. The day also recognises the contribution of engineers to India’s infrastructure, technology, industry and national development.
Why Engineers’ Day Is Celebrated on September 15
Sir M Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, at Muddenahalli in present-day Karnataka.
India began observing his birth anniversary as Engineers’ Day in 1968, recognising his contribution to engineering, public administration and nation-building. Since then, September 15 has become an annual occasion to honour engineers across different fields.
Visvesvaraya’s Contribution to Indian Engineering
Visvesvaraya is particularly remembered for his work in water management, irrigation and flood-control engineering.
Among his notable achievements was the development of automatic water-control floodgates used at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune. His engineering expertise was also associated with major water-management and infrastructure projects in Mysore and Hyderabad.
He later served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, playing an important role in the state’s industrial, educational and infrastructure development.
Awarded Bharat Ratna in 1955
For his contribution to engineering and public service, Visvesvaraya was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955, India’s highest civilian honour.
His legacy continues to be closely associated with the idea that engineering should solve practical public problems and contribute directly to economic and social development.
Engineering Institutions Mark the Day Across India
Colleges, universities and professional engineering organisations across the country are marking Engineers’ Day with technical competitions, seminars, project exhibitions, quizzes and discussions on innovation and technology.
At Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, the institute’s 24th convocation is being held today, deliberately coinciding with Engineers’ Day. NITI Aayog member Dr R. Balasubramaniam is scheduled to attend as the chief guest.
AI and Emerging Technologies Reshape Engineering
Engineers’ Day 2026 also comes at a time when India is expanding investment in areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, robotics, space and advanced manufacturing.
Industry and academic experts have increasingly highlighted the need for engineers to combine traditional technical knowledge with AI literacy, interdisciplinary skills, creativity and practical problem-solving abilities.
Engineers Remain Central to India’s Development
From roads, dams and power systems to digital infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence, engineers remain central to India’s economic and technological ambitions.
Engineers’ Day therefore serves both as a tribute to Sir M Visvesvaraya and as recognition of the millions of engineers contributing to the country’s modern infrastructure and future technologies.
