PUNE, September 10: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar has said research is underway to make India’s Anti-Defection Law more effective and robust, as a special committee studies possible reforms.
Four-Speaker Committee Reviewing Law
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has constituted a committee comprising four Assembly Speakers to examine the anti-defection framework. Narwekar has been appointed chairman of the panel.
Report Expected by December
The committee is studying ways to strengthen implementation of the law and is expected to submit its findings to the Lok Sabha Speaker by the end of December.
Narwekar said the objective is to make the existing provisions more effective amid continuing debates over political defections and party splits.
