OpenAI has begun rolling out advertisements inside ChatGPT in India, expanding its advertising business into one of its largest global markets. More than 50 brands are expected to participate in the initial rollout, according to the company’s announcement.
The advertisements are being introduced for logged-in adult users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Users subscribed to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans will continue to use ChatGPT without advertisements.
Ads will appear separately below ChatGPT responses when the system determines that a sponsored product or service may be relevant to the conversation. OpenAI says sponsored placements will be clearly labelled and will remain separate from the AI-generated answer.
The company has also stressed that advertisements will not influence ChatGPT’s responses. OpenAI says answers will continue to be generated independently based on what is useful to the user rather than the interests of advertisers.
For the India launch, OpenAI has partnered with major advertising groups WPP and Omnicom, which will work with brands on areas including campaign strategy, creative development, measurement and brand safety. The agency partnerships are non-exclusive, with additional partners expected to join in the future.
OpenAI also plans to open its self-service ChatGPT Ads Manager in India from September 4, 2026. Businesses will be able to create and manage advertising campaigns directly, with daily budgets reportedly starting at ₹725.
Privacy remains a key part of OpenAI’s advertising policy. The company says advertisers will not receive access to users’ private conversations, chat history or personal details. Instead, advertisers will receive aggregated campaign information such as impressions and clicks.
Users will also be able to dismiss advertisements, provide feedback and control aspects of advertising personalisation. Ads are not intended to appear for accounts identified as belonging to users under the age of 18, while restrictions also apply around sensitive categories.
The India rollout follows OpenAI’s earlier introduction of ChatGPT advertising in markets including the United States and subsequent international expansions, marking another major step in the company’s effort to build advertising as a revenue stream while supporting free and lower-cost access to ChatGPT.
