New Delhi, July 11: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather warnings as the southwest monsoon remains active across large parts of the country. According to the latest forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over several regions during the next 24 to 48 hours, prompting authorities to advise citizens to remain alert and follow official weather advisories.
The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall over northern, eastern, northeastern and parts of central India, while isolated locations could witness extremely heavy downpours capable of causing waterlogging, flash floods and transport disruptions.
States Under Heavy Rain Warning
According to the latest IMD bulletin, heavy rainfall is likely in several states, including:
- East Uttar Pradesh
- Bihar
- Assam
- Meghalaya
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Nagaland
- Manipur
- Mizoram
- Tripura
- Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim
Rainfall activity is also expected to continue over parts of Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala under the influence of active monsoon conditions.
Flash Flood Risk in Vulnerable Areas
The IMD has warned that intense rainfall could increase the risk of:
- Flash floods
- Urban waterlogging
- Landslides in hilly regions
- River level rise
- Traffic disruptions
- Localised damage to infrastructure
Authorities have advised district administrations in vulnerable regions to closely monitor weather conditions and remain prepared for emergency response if required.
Advisory for Citizens
The weather department has urged people to remain cautious during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Residents are advised to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall.
- Stay away from flooded roads and overflowing rivers.
- Monitor official IMD forecasts regularly.
- Follow instructions issued by local authorities.
- Keep emergency essentials readily available.
- Drive carefully as visibility may reduce during heavy showers.
People living in landslide-prone and low-lying areas have been advised to remain especially vigilant.
Disaster Response on Standby
State governments and disaster management authorities have activated precautionary measures in several regions.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, fire services and district administrations are coordinating preparedness efforts to respond quickly to any weather-related emergencies.
Officials said emergency teams are monitoring vulnerable districts while maintaining communication with weather agencies for real-time updates.
Monsoon Benefiting Agriculture
Despite the possibility of localised disruptions, the active monsoon continues to support agricultural activities across much of the country.
The widespread rainfall is expected to improve soil moisture for Kharif crops, including paddy, maize, soybean, cotton and pulses, while replenishing reservoirs and groundwater levels in many regions.
Agricultural experts, however, have advised farmers in flood-prone districts to remain cautious if rainfall becomes excessive.
IMD Continues Close Monitoring
The India Meteorological Department stated that it will continue monitoring the evolving monsoon systems and issue updated forecasts whenever necessary.
Authorities have appealed to citizens not to rely on rumours circulating on social media and instead follow only official weather bulletins released by the IMD and local administrations.
With the southwest monsoon expected to remain active over several regions in the coming days, preparedness and timely public awareness remain key to minimising weather-related risks.
