New Delhi, July 10: India has announced an ambitious roadmap to host 29 international sporting events over the next two years, reinforcing its campaign to secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympic Games. The initiative is aimed at showcasing the country’s growing capability to organise world-class sporting competitions while strengthening sports infrastructure, technical expertise and international partnerships.
Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said the strategy reflects India’s long-term vision of becoming a global sporting destination and preparing the country to successfully host one of the world’s biggest multi-sport events.
Strengthening India’s Olympic Bid
India is currently pursuing its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad proposed as the principal host city. The Indian Olympic Association remains engaged with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the ongoing host-selection process.
Officials believe that regularly hosting international competitions will demonstrate India’s ability to manage major sporting events while creating a lasting sporting legacy.
29 International Events Planned
According to the Sports Ministry, the calendar includes competitions across several Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines.
Among the events expected to be hosted are championships in:
- Badminton
- Table Tennis
- Amateur Snooker
- Archery
- Wrestling
- Athletics
- Other continental and world-level competitions
National sports federations have also been encouraged to bid for additional international tournaments over the coming years.
Building World-Class Infrastructure
Hosting more international competitions is expected to accelerate investment in sports infrastructure across the country.
The initiative will support:
- Modern stadiums and training centres
- Sports science facilities
- Athlete support systems
- Digital event management
- Volunteer training
- International-standard officiating
Officials said these improvements will benefit Indian athletes long after the events conclude.
Boost for Indian Athletes
The Government believes hosting international tournaments at home will provide Indian athletes with greater exposure against world-class competition while reducing the financial burden of overseas participation.
Competing on home soil is also expected to help athletes gain valuable experience ahead of future Olympic and international championships.
Sports administrators noted that organising regular global events would improve India’s sporting ecosystem at every level.
Economic and Tourism Benefits
Beyond sports, the programme is expected to generate economic opportunities through tourism, hospitality, transportation and local businesses.
Major international events often attract athletes, officials, media personnel and spectators from around the world, creating additional employment and promoting India’s image as a global sporting destination.
Experts believe successful event management will strengthen India’s credentials before the IOC evaluates future Olympic hosts.
Vision for 2036
Since last year, India has organised dozens of international sporting events across multiple cities and aims to substantially increase that number by 2028 as part of its Olympic preparations.
Officials emphasised that the objective is not only to win hosting rights but also to create a sustainable sporting ecosystem capable of producing world-class athletes, coaches, officials and infrastructure.
The Government reiterated that sports development remains a national priority and expressed confidence that India’s expanding experience in organising international competitions will strengthen its campaign to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
