New Delhi, June 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of the country over the next few days as the southwest monsoon continues to advance. At the same time, isolated areas of eastern and western Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience heatwave conditions, creating contrasting weather patterns across India.
The weather agency has advised state governments and local administrations to remain prepared for possible flooding, waterlogging, landslides, and disruption to transport services in vulnerable regions.
Heavy Rainfall Likely in Several States
According to the IMD, intense rainfall is expected over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Several of these regions may witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, increasing the risk of localized flooding and damage to infrastructure.
Flood and Landslide Risks Increase
The IMD has warned that persistent rainfall may trigger flash floods, river swelling, urban waterlogging, and landslides, particularly in the Himalayan states and the Northeast.
Disaster management authorities have been placed on alert, while rescue teams remain prepared for emergency response in districts vulnerable to heavy rainfall.
Heatwave Continues in Parts of Uttar Pradesh
While monsoon activity has intensified across much of the country, parts of eastern and western Uttar Pradesh are expected to continue experiencing heatwave conditions during the day.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, remain hydrated, and take necessary precautions, especially children, senior citizens, and people with existing health conditions.
Farmers and Travellers Advised to Remain Alert
Agricultural experts have welcomed the widespread rainfall as beneficial for Kharif crop sowing, but cautioned farmers against waterlogging in low-lying fields. Authorities have also advised travellers to monitor weather updates before undertaking journeys in hilly and flood-prone regions.
Motorists have been urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and to follow traffic advisories issued by local administrations.
IMD to Continue Monitoring Monsoon Progress
The weather department said it will continue to closely monitor the progress of the southwest monsoon and issue updated forecasts as conditions evolve.
Citizens have been encouraged to follow official IMD bulletins and advisories issued by state disaster management authorities for timely information and safety guidance.
