India Refuses to Accept SCO Statement That Ignores Pahalgam Terror Attack, Says Jaishankar

India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, has made it clear that India is not satisfied with the outcome document of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting. The reason is that this document did not mention the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which several Indian soldiers lost their lives. Jaishankar said that such an omission is not acceptable to India because terrorism is a major concern and it must be strongly condemned by all member countries of the SCO.

The Pahalgam attack took place in June 2025 when terrorists ambushed an Indian Army convoy. This attack led to the death of multiple soldiers and injuries to others. India strongly believes that terrorist acts like this should be called out openly, especially in international groupings like SCO, where member countries promise to work together against terrorism. Dr. Jaishankar said that ignoring such an important incident weakens the global fight against terrorism.

At the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in Astana, Kazakhstan, Dr. Jaishankar clearly stated that India would not agree to a joint declaration that doesn’t include a strong and direct reference to the Pahalgam attack. He said India’s stand on terrorism is well known and firm. India has always maintained that terrorism must be dealt with seriously and cannot be ignored or brushed aside.

He also highlighted the importance of trust and cooperation among SCO countries. “If we cannot even call out terrorism when it hits our soldiers, then how can we claim to be serious about regional security?” he questioned. His words reflected India’s disappointment with some member countries that may not have supported the inclusion of the Pahalgam attack in the final statement.

Dr. Jaishankar also mentioned that the credibility of any international forum depends on how it handles serious issues like terrorism. He said that by avoiding mention of such attacks, the SCO risks becoming less effective in its goals. He urged other nations in the group to take a stronger stand against terrorism in all forms and not let political differences affect joint decisions. India’s decision to stand firm on this matter has gained attention. Many experts believe that India’s clear message shows its strong position against terrorism and its expectations from partner countries. This also shows that India is not willing to compromise when it comes to the safety and security of its people and soldiers. In addition to terrorism, Dr. Jaishankar also talked about the need for better connectivity, trade, and cooperation among SCO members. However, he made it clear that none of these things can progress unless there is peace and security in the region.
