AI Translation Revolutionizes the Supreme Court’s Workflow

AI Translation

Even the Supreme Court of India is embracing technology, with AI translation recently adopted to enhance its operations. This innovation will streamline the translation of court documents and legal research, making justice more accessible for everyone.

Supreme Court Accepts AI to Improve Justice

As of February 2023, AI has been used by the Supreme Court to write formal arguments in Constitution Bench cases. The effort is now bigger than it was before. Important Supreme Court and High Court decisions are being translated into many local languages by a dedicated group led by an Hon’ble Judge. This group works closely with High Court subcommittees to make sure that translation work is done quickly and correctly.

Getting the law out there for everyone

e-High Court Reports (e-HCR) are already being used by eight High Courts under this new method, and more are set to follow. The AI Translation Committees are closely watching the process to make sure that the translations are of good quality. Also, these committees want state governments to translate all federal and state rules into their own languages and post them on their websites. This change is meant to make legal knowledge easier for everyone to understand, which is in line with the constitutional idea of “access to justice.”

Progress and Effects

As of August 5, 2024, the Supreme Court had written 36,271 decisions in Hindi and 17,142 decisions in 16 other regional languages. That these versions are on the e-SCR portal makes them easy for anyone to get to.

A Step Forward for Justice

The addition of AI to the court system is a big step toward making justice easier to get. Not only will this technology help lawyers and courts, it will also help people understand the law better. With AI Translation, the language of justice is becoming more open, so it can be understood by everyone.
