Cricketer arrest stay: Karnataka High Court temporarily stays arrest of this former cricketer

The Karnataka High Court has granted interim relief to former cricketer Robin Uthappa by staying the arrest warrant issued against him in a case related to alleged irregularities in Employees Provident Fund (EPF) deposits. Justice Suraj Govindaraj, who was heading the vacation bench, gave this order after Uthappa filed a petition challenging the warrant and the related recovery notice. The interim order of the High Court not only stayed the arrest warrant, but also suspended further proceedings related to the case, granting temporary relief to the cricketer. In fact, the Bengaluru Police had issued an arrest warrant on December 21 based on the instructions of the Regional PF Commissioner on December 4. The warrant sought recovery of dues related to Uthappa’s former role as director in Centaurus Lifestyle Brands.

According to the information received, the allegations stated that the company deducted PF contributions from the salaries of employees, but failed to deposit the contribution, resulting in an outstanding amount of Rs 23.36 lakh. Uthappa served as the director of the company from 2018 till his resignation in May 2020. Let us tell you that during the hearing, senior advocate Prabhuling Navadgi, appearing for Uthappa, argued that “as per his agreement with the cricketer company founder Krishnadas Thandananda Havde, his client was not involved in the day-to-day operations of the company.” Navadgi insisted that “Uthappa cannot be held accountable as an ’employer’ under the EPF Act.” Meanwhile, Uthappa’s legal team further clarified that “he had officially resigned from his directorship in the year 2020 and informed the authorities of his departure.” The lawyers emphasized that “Uthappa had initiated legal proceedings (Cricketer arrest stay) against the company for not paying the loan given to him.”

Court temporarily stayed the arrest warrant issued in fraud case

However, in a public statement, Uthappa reiterated that “his involvement with the company was purely financial and he had no role in its management or decision-making processes.” Well, now the case is expected to be heard further in the coming weeks. For now, the High Court has granted interim relief to former cricketer Robin Uthappa on Tuesday and temporarily stayed the arrest warrant issued against him in the Provident Fund (PF) fraud case.
