The joy of a double win
First and foremost, India has won a gold medal in both the open, i.e., men’s team and women’s team, in the Chess Olympiad 2024. This is the first time an Indian team has achieved this feat. The match took place in Budapest, Hungary. Chess legends from all over the world gathered there. But our players won.
What did the men’s team do?

The other players didn’t do too well either. R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna, and Srinath Narayanan combined to win the team.
Women too showed their strength.
The women’s team did nothing. They also defeated Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. The team was led by captain Harika Dronavalli. Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, Tania Sachdev, and Abhijeet Kunte all gave their best.
Exciting journey
The whole tournament was very exciting. India won the first match by eight wickets. Then in the ninth round, tied with the previous champion, Uzbekistan. Despite this, the team did not give up and finally won.
Some memorable moments
There were many moments in this Chess Olympiad that will be remembered for a long time. Such as: Gukesh wins against Caruana; Praggnanandhaa wins a 50-move match; Harika defeats a famous Chinese player; Arjuna wins an important victory in the last round.
Congratulations to Prime Minister Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the players. “This victory adds a new chapter in Indian sports. He hoped that this would attract more children towards playing chess.
A wave of happiness in the country
As soon as the news broke out, the entire nation erupted in joy. People expressed their anger on social media. Many state governments announced to honour the players.
While the Indian chess team has brought laurels to the country, now more and more children can also show their interest in this game.
