Magnus Carlsen Talks About His Tough Loss to Gukesh

Gukesh beats Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen, one of the best chess players in the world, recently shared how he felt after losing a very important game to young Indian chess star, D. Gukesh. This happened during the Candidates Chess Tournament, a big competition where the winner gets a chance to play for the World Chess Championship. Carlsen, who used to be the World Chess Champion for many years, was not playing in the tournament himself. But he was closely watching the matches and supporting his friend and fellow Norwegian player, Fabiano Caruana. In the final round, Caruana had a good chance to win the tournament if Gukesh lost. But Gukesh managed to draw (tie) his game and finished on top of the leaderboard. This meant Gukesh became the youngest player ever to win the Candidates Tournament.

Magnus and Gukesh about the win

After the tournament ended, Carlsen talked about a game he had lost to Gukesh in another event called the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T Challenge. He said the loss still “hurts” him. “It was painful,” Carlsen admitted in a live video. He said that Gukesh had played in a way that was very risky and aggressive, what Carlsen called “blindly pushing.” On most days, Carlsen believes he would have won that game. But that day, things just didn’t go his way.

Carlsen didn’t say this to be mean about Gukesh’s playing style. In fact, he said he was impressed that Gukesh had the courage to play so boldly. He even praised Gukesh for being calm and steady during the Candidates Tournament, especially during the last game when the pressure was huge. D. Gukesh is just 17 years old, and this win is a huge deal for him. He’s now the youngest player in history to challenge for the World Championship title. The person he will face in the final match is China’s Ding Liren, the current World Champion.

Many people were expecting other players, like Ian Nepomniachtchi or Hikaru Nakamura, to win the Candidates. But Gukesh surprised everyone with his smart moves and cool attitude. Even though he doesn’t show much emotion while playing, Carlsen noticed that Gukesh was smiling and very happy after winning the tournament.

Carlsen’s honest comments show how much he cares about chess. Even though he is one of the greatest players ever, he still remembers the games he lost, especially the ones he felt he could have won. But he also shows respect to young talents like Gukesh, who are rising fast in the chess world.

Now, everyone is excited to see what happens next. Can Gukesh become the youngest World Chess Champion ever? We’ll have to wait and see
