“Not a single drop” PM Modi message to Pakistan abou Indus Valley treaty

Not a single drop water statement MODI

India and Pakistan are two countries that share rivers. These rivers are very important because they give water to the people who live there. A long time ago, in 1960, both countries signed an agreement called the Indus Waters Treaty. This treaty said how the water from these rivers should be shared. India got to use the water from three rivers – the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. Pakistan got to use water from the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers.

Is India reconsidering the treaty?

Even though India and Pakistan have fought wars and don’t always get along, this water agreement has been followed for many years. It was one of the few things that both countries agreed on for over 60 years. But something very bad happened recently that changed everything. In April 2025, there was a terrible terrorist attack in a place called Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, a state in India. Many people died in the attack, including tourists who were just visiting. The Indian government said that the attack was planned by terrorists who came from Pakistan. This made India very angry.

Because of this attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India will stop following the Indus Waters Treaty. He said that not even a single drop of water would go to Pakistan. He said that all of India’s water will now be used only for Indian people. He also said that India has the right to use its share of the water, and now it will use it fully. This is a very big decision. The rivers that flow into Pakistan from India are very important for Pakistan’s farmers. They use the water to grow crops like wheat and rice. If the water stops or becomes less, it can cause big problems in Pakistan. There could be less food, and people may suffer.

Some people in other countries are worried too. Water is a very important resource, and when two countries fight over water, it can cause more problems. A country called Slovenia, which is part of the United Nations Security Council, asked questions about India’s decision. They said that water is a basic right and that stopping it could be very serious.

India, on the other hand, said that it only wants to use its fair share of the water. The government also said that Pakistan needs to stop supporting terrorism. India feels that it’s not fair to keep following the treaty when Pakistan is not helping to keep peace. This whole situation shows how important peace is between countries. When countries don’t get along, even water can become a problem. It also shows how important rivers and natural resources are. People need water to live, to farm, and to grow food. So when water becomes part of a fight, it affects many people.

Some experts say that both countries should talk and find a peaceful way to solve this problem. If they don’t, the fight over water could get worse. But this retaliation was necessary to show India will not tolerate against terrorism.
