Myeloma or Multiple Myeloma is a type of blood cancer, which is also called B cell malignancy. It affects the blood cells and bone marrow of our body. In this disease, these cells start growing rapidly in the bone marrow i.e. the muscle tissue located inside the bone. This causes tumours in the bones and starts releasing harmful proteins in the blood. In such a situation, when plasma cells grow more, then they suppress the healthy blood cells, due to which the body becomes weak.

In simple language, it is a type of blood cancer, which starts from plasma cells. Plasma cells are white blood cells, which make antibodies to fight infection in the body. This disease is more common in men than women.

85 percent of patients are able to survive only for one year

Sometimes this disease increases so much that it also damages other organs of the body like kidneys etc. Patients suffering from this often complain of back pain. Some people also complain of renal failure (kidney failure) or chest infection. You can guess how dangerous the Multiple Myeloma disease is from the fact that about 85 percent of the patients suffering from it survive only for a year. Only 30 percent of the patients survive for 10 years due to timely treatment. There are others who survive only for 5 years.

These are the symptoms of Multiple Myeloma

Pain and infection in the waist bone, especially the spine, hips or chest, fatigue, weight loss, constipation, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. are the symptoms of this disease. Let us tell you that this disease can be detected by blood test and bone marrow test. This shows which stage of myeloma it is. Apart from this, there are some other tests and parameters, on the basis of which it can be ascertained how far the cancer has spread.

This disease occurs due to these reasons

The symptoms of this disease are not normal. As the problem increases, its symptoms become more severe. It may be related to changes in genes, contact with some chemicals and weak immune system. Talking about its risk factors, it mostly occurs to people above 60 years of age.

What is the treatment for this disease

Like cancer, there is a treatment for this disease as well. In this, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, stem cell transplant, immunotherapy and some supportive therapy are used. Its effect can be controlled through all these. According to experts, Multiple Myeloma cannot be completely cured. However, by identifying and treating the disease in time, its symptoms can be reduced as well as it can be controlled. Bone marrow transplant is also done for patients below 60 years of age.

Is there a possibility of survival for the patient?

This disease is usually seen only after the age of 60. As far as the possibility of survival is concerned, patients are sent to the ICU only to control chest infection. If this infection is controlled then the patient survives, otherwise not.
